Exactly. Quality of the hunting experience or quality of the buffalo? Do you want to hunt him in a free range environment like Moz or Zim or a game ranch in South Africa? Do you want a guaranteed 38" bull or an experience where your PH is doing everything in his power to get you the best buff he can find in the time allotted? Working through that can do a lot to focus your search. Each of those environments can provide a quality hunting experience - but not all.

I mean no offense and I truly hope you find what you are looking for, but every time I see a thread like this it makes me laugh. Imagine how we would react if women walked around going "I'm looking for men with at least 12 plus inches" whatever happens just enjoy the experience. A buff hunt is a lot of money, but it doesn't have to be wasted if you don't get that 38" stud, lol

Outside spread doesn't tell it all. A 36 inch buff with lots of drop and deep hooks with a back sweep would be way better than a flat "40

Exactly!! I had two opportunities of 40” Buff but they were flat and zero drop. My Ph had asked before what type of Buff I liked and I didn’t even know. I showed him some buff and he was quick so say you like a buff with good drop and hooks. I had a superb tracking hunt and took a beautiful old 37.5” buff. Wouldn’t trade it for anything it was exactly what’s i liked in My first Cape buffalo.

I would say quality is overall experience and mainly the trophy that you will hang against your wall at home as this is what you will be looking at for a very long time!

It grieves me to see how many soft boss bulls are being hunted the last year or 2 by outfitters, it simply does not matter how good of a deal you find anywhere, if it is a soft boss bull it is a young bull!!! That is my personal opinion and some hunters won't care, for me the quality of animal taken is VERY important as that is what showcase your company and ability to offer high end safaris at an affordable price.

    My 2 cents...

All my best in planning your safari sir!

    Jacques

There really is nothing like tracking old dagga boys. There are quite a few 40+ inch young, smooth or soft boss bulls around and I see quite a few photos of them posted by hunters. An old dagga boy with heavy bosses and worn off or broken tips that is hunted by tracking is by far the superior "trophy"... really no comparison IMO.

I agree with Jacques. I would rather shoot a scrum cap than a soft bossed 46” bull, in fact I would refuse the shot on any soft bossed bull regardless of size. Go for a quality tracking hunt in an area that allows you to target lone and small groups of dugga boys. You will have the hunt of a lifetime!

Brickburn's question is spot on: What is "quality"?
For some people only the trophy matters, others want an authentic hunting experience.
Hunting in Zambia, Tanzania , Mozambique and parts of Namibia is "proper" and what I would call "quality".
Buffalo are plentiful in SA, especially Limpopo province, but a lot of the hunting I wouldn't count as "quality" as the farms are frequently quite small and the majority of the animals are habituated . Some are also routinely fed in the dry winter months. The result is often a bit "canned".
The upside (unlike some of the places mentioned) is that you know the animals are there. It may take a day or two to find a good one but basically they cant get off the reserve, so its just a matter of finding the one you want - which you can sometimes do based on photos.
One also gets amazing animals in this region from time to time. Normally old bulls past their breeding age or bulls which are "problem animals" and so have to be culled. These can be really huge - as in tank sized.
Personally I'd rather hunt truly wild animals on big reserves, but it can be hard work, and in some places (eg Zim and Moz) you run a real risk of drawing a blank.
And then there's the question of accommodation. Some are happy with a simple tented camp or a "rondawel" with an outside cooking area, while for others only a five star lodge will do.
Thus the question remains - what is "quality"?

If this is your first buff hunt, just go for the total experience. I can promise you that if the experience is outstanding, you will care less about the inches. I have 4 cape buff mounted. My first, and my last 3. The last 3 being warn off, old daga boys that were tracked and taken by their lonesome. These were worthy of mounting for the memory alone. I have yet to have anyone see them and ask how many inches they are. They ask me to tell the story. That is what cape buff hunting is all about.
