I have been able to save an extra $25,000.00 that I would like to spend on my first African safari. The $25,000.00 needs to be able to cover ALL the expenses (hunt, fees, dip/pack, taxidermy, and shipment to US).
Air fair is not to be included in the $25,000.00

I was wondering what some of you folks thought would make a fantastic first safari on this budget.
-species? Country? Outfitter?

Thanks in advance

Joseph Kerr

you should do that , standing on your head ..
look into some of the outstanding packages from the outfitters on here , for starters.
if you cant find a package that fits your idea of a African adventure , these guys are usually more than able/willing to work with you
on getting it sorted.
have fun planning and communicating ,while getting to know the guy that will make your hunt , one you will never forget,
welcome to AH, enjoy the site

Welcome to AH Joseph.

Check out the offers, as bluey suggested. You should be on your way.

With that budget, you can do quite a bit. You could have quite a PG hunt and a Cape Buff if you want to. Or perhaps PG in two countries or at least two different areas in one country where you're going for species available in one but not the other and then vice versa.

Before I go further I'd like to know what you're interested in.

That is a very generous first hunt, plains game budget. With that you will cover all your expenses for maybe half a dozen trophy quality animals over a two week period.

With the nuts and bolts covered you can now decide who, where and what to take.
1) What are your top preferred animals ? (Do you want to hunt them in their natural environment and not introduced to a foreign biome/ranch) do a bit of research to find their natural range and if they occur there together.
2) What level of luxury and pampering do you need back at camp. The sky is the limit on this $$$$.
For some a nightly Braai under a open sky and a few cold Lagers is more enjoyable than a 4 star lodge with 3 courses and wine.
3) Do you have a romantic notion of where you want to hunt:
Is it a foot hunt across the Kalahari ?
Tracking animals through the bushveldt/lowveldt ?
Long range hunting and Dassie busting in the Karoo ?
The wild riverine and excarpment country of NW Zimbabwe ? (The more remote the more expensive)

You can do Dangerous Game on a first hunt, but with that budget you may have to give up some other aspects of a first time hunt. Best to concentrate on Plains game, get a feel for how it is done, the country and people and then come back for DG with the knowledge you have acquired.

Have fun planning. All the best.

You are going to have a great time! And you might as well start saving for the next one because you will want to go again.

Just you or are you bringing a companion(s)? How long can you be gone? How long so you want to be gone? What kind of shape are you in?

What do you want to hunt? Do you have much experience hunting? How comfortable/confident are you? You can shoot a LOT of plains game or you can probably do one or two dangerous game if you really shop around. I've been told volume gets deals. There are LOTS of package deals out there, almost endless PG package combinations and you might be able to find a lion/buffalo.

I would bet there are some deals floating around on lions in RSA... We are all fairly concerned that lion hunting could be banned. USFW may block importation of lions soon and if not, there is huge concern over the next CITIES meeting. So if that is something on your bucket list, perhaps now is the time. I was not ready for a DG hunt until I did PG first. But that is a personal question only you can answer.

Some outfitters have relationships with taxidermists and might negotiate that as part of a complete package.

What type of mounts do you want? Have you looked into taxidermy yet? My taxidermy bill alone will be about half of that budget but I am probably getting carried away. However you have time on that... And certainly can limit what you spend and still have really nice mementos of your hunt. I paid 50% advance on taxidermy and that was actually a month or two after the hunt. It will be about a year after the hunt before they are done and the balance is due. Then shipping expense. My biggest expense will be the space to hang them.... Working on that now.

Read some of the hunting reports. Send out some PM's if you need the "rest of the story". If you don't understand something, ask.

I do suspect your PM box is going to be full from outfitters and booking agents by morning;)

this is more than enough for your first safari, there will be allot of pictures and trophies involved, i hopeyou find what you are looking for, there are many great outfitters on this site.

I would like to use this opportunity to welcome you to AH you have picked the perfect platform to start from.

my very best always

We are towards the end of the season, so if you can move pretty fast then you can accomplish a lot as there are many deals available with quotas still open. With that amount you can do a leopard + PG, tuskless elephant + PG, cape buffalo + PG etc., etc..

Good luck.

Welcome to the forum sir! Any chance that we could interest you in a cancellation Leopard hunt in Namibia for this year? Plenty of plains game also available. Three toms on the baits as we speak.

All the best in your planning.

Take Care,
Marius Goosen

Welcome to the forum sir!

You would be able to find lots on offer if you look under the Great Deals section of Africa Hunting. We also have a number of very good and reputable outfits active which would be able to give you whatever your heart desires.

Feel free to contact any or myself should you have any questions or concerns.

Happy Hunting.

Welcome!

You'll be able to learn plenty here and I'm hoping that you already have as it seems you've hung around for quite a while.

NOT if you include Taxidermy and shipping Phil! All costs. :)

When you open the home page near the top is a deals button. That takes you to some of the deals posted lately. For plains game the offer by Kanana is hard to beat. For your budget you could add several more animals and another 4 days to make a 2 week trip. That would make a great trip. Bruce

Welcome to AH, Joseph !

Joseph,

Try Mike Birch of Hunt the Sun.... The lodge he uses and the PHs are excellent....

www.huntthesun.com.

Would be good to know what species of PG you are interested in and if you want to do any sightseeing while there...Are you bringing any non-hunters, etc.

You can contact me at email archerman@mail.com

Very true sir. Our hunt was in round numbers $15,000 for the hunt (airfare, PH & trophy fees, tips etc...) and we are guessing it will be about $10,000 for the taxidermy.

While budgeting I quickly figured out I could handle the hunting, it was the taxidermy I couldn't afford!!! :)
