Cape buffalo hunt with a heart condition?

I think the best question is why does your doctor want you to avoid malaria areas, is it the malaria itself or the preventative medication.

If you want an elephant, you could hunt the winter months in a lot of those places you mentioned and not have to worry about Malaria.

If you are ok with just buff, I would just stay within South Africa and not worry about it. Just find a big enough concession and enjoy.

We have self-sustaining herds of buffalo on very large property in the Kalahari which is malaria free.
The Kalahari is not a true desert as you imagine but are actually full of trees and scrubs and grass.
Our average rainfall is 16 inches a year and this year so far we have had wonderful rains so the grass is lush and green.
All elephant hunts that I know of are in malaria areas.

First, thank you very much for different opinions, some more polite than others. I believe some of you misinterpreted my question. I never asked for a risk analysis for me going to Africa or other traveling advises, I use my doctor for that. (Who by the way have spent a lot of time working in sub-tropical Africa and he is a cardiac surgeon). All I asked for is if there are buffalo / elephant hunts available outside fenced area and outside the malaria zone. I now understand that most or all outfitters in RSA offering buffalo hunts have fenced areas, large or small.

Von S., not sure what your problem is, but it occurs to me you have a serious attitude problem. I don’t see any indications that you are a cardiac specialist, so until you have some facts related to my question I suggest you stay away from this discussion.

To sum up, I believe I have learned what I needed to learn, so thank you all. I now have something to work with. (In cooperation with my doctor ).

As Wheels suggested, check the malaria maps carefully. Locals tend to be much more relaxed about malaria as they have developed a certain level of immunity to it. Having had malaria myself, it is not something I care to repeat and I don’t have a heart condition!

This is a superb free-range suggestion. Jamy Traut is a tremendous outfitter (I took the buffalo in my avatar with him in the Caprivi) https://jamyhunts.com/ and he is indeed a sponsor here. He has the Plateau's concession. The permits are very limited, and the bulls are some of the largest anywhere in Africa. It is also not one of the cheapest options, but you will never have an opportunity for a more spectacular old bull. As Wheels notes you can fly directly from Frankfurt to Windhoek and drive to the concession without ever being in a malarial zone. I would at least open a dialogue with him.

You could fly into Windhoek and hunt the Waterberg plateau for buffalo and never be in a malarial zone. I don't know an outfitter that hunts there but there are Namibian outfitters on AH. If you pm them, they can probably help you out, or point you in the right direction.

A year later twins arrived and I was stuck in the family situation. As far as I understand, that excludes Zimbabwe, Zambia, Botswana, Mozambique, Namibia (Caprivi strip) and Tanzania. I am interested in the Cape buffalo but a non-trophy elephant (Tuscless, non-exportable or PAC) could also be of interest. I found some outfitters in RSA outside malaria area, but I would really love to hunt in a non-fenced area. What alternatives are there, if any?

As a backup I have the option of going to the NT Australia, but that's not a Cape buffalo.

I really appreciate any advice.

I would think the stresses of following buffalo till you get a good shot would be a lot higher risk than getting malaria.

Totally agree, experienced it personally, not the mosquito but the buffalo in a malaria area.

Yes that is correct sir. Some areas of Limpopo do indeed have the potential for Malaria - however where we are based that is not an issue and we are in a Malaria free zone. We will also not be travelling through any areas that have it whatsoever. It is a completely safe hunt with regards to Malaria. An absolutely fair question sir!

Very well sir, I hope you are all still doing fine amidst the COVID19 crises. While totally understanding your concerns, amongst all the countries where we own our own areas and companies, including Namibia (Caprivi) and Tanzania where we can certainly offer you a very exciting, traditional African adventure, but more likely in Namibia in terms of your request: Cape Buffalo and Non -exportable Elephant.
I can assure you that if we do the hunt in July / August, when it is cold, NO single mosquito will bother you. I've had my 2 yr and 5 yr in camp already and the mozzies just love that young sweet blood -they show reactions to the mozzie bites rather quick - this last winter - they did not show anything and I have not heard a single mosquito. So, to say the least, I would consider it very safe to hunt with us out of our Lusese camp in Caprivi.

First I will say all of hunting takes place in Zimbabwe and most areas of Zimbabwe are considered Malaria areas, but I also believe in using common sense and proper Malaria prophylactics.
