375 more than I need?

I have found my way to possess about 200 pc of brass should not need much more I found that my mossberg is extremely easy on brass

That's awesome.
I hope mine is easy on brass. Midway USA has free shipping and it's almost my birthday so I just ordered 50 for the 375, 50 for the 450BM and a Swift reloading manual. After the two boxes of Hornady DGX get shot I'll have about 90.
Now I got to pay for all this stuff. :(

I did some math and even if I only get 3 reloads the cost savings is substantial.

I figured it out once less than $40 a box with the GS Customs. And as long as I can get them that’s my bullet gives me range and power for everything I plan to shoot just rethinking my choice of scope for the long shots 2-7 not quite enough.
Only problem is I liked 375R so much that I started building a 404J less than a year later. It’s a slippery slope you know!!!

The gun came in today. All in all it looks and feels nice to me. I do want to do some work on the bolt and receiver though as it scratches the the brass a bit. The feed lips seem to be sharp and need some polishing I think.
Here are some pictures. You can see how bright those sights are as I mentioned before.
As I said the Winchester is definitely a bit more elegant and polished but hopefully this rifle will be a solid and reliable tool.

Very nice the scratches on brass seems to be a Ruger trademark both Ruger m77 I have owned did this.

Thank you Sir. I am happy with it but the real test will be shooting it. Yes, the m77's seem to be a bit rough around the edges. I have 2 and they both have those sharp feed lips on the mag. First order of business will be to smooth it out a bit.
The ammo I got turned out to be the Hornady superperformance 300 DGS so it looks to be the newer stuff from what I can tell. I'll shoot that up and start working out a load for the swift a frame. Think I'll just stick with those if the gun likes them as it's my 'hope to get to Africa someday' gun and quite a few people seem to rate swift highly. I usually cast my own but for this gun mine would most likely sub-par.

Nice rifle!

Sounds like a very thorough and well thought out decision.

I hope you end up loving it!

What are your plans f0r this new beast?

Thank you Sir,

My plan right now is to learn to shoot it well with the irons to about 50 yrds then get a scope with QD rings and go from there.
The rifle is a personal statement of intent for myself and gods of 'help Mikey go hunting'.
Right now and for the foreseeable future my dutys make even an overnight get away challenging.
My brother and I are working on building a little hunting cabin out in Jackson this spring but that's in the shotgun zone as we call it. No hunting with the 375 here.
Once I hit retirement I hope to mix traveling and hunting.
I plan on possibly sailing the Great Lakes and around the coast to Florida, Texas and up to Alaska. I'm not wealthy by any means but I'm putting away pennies for about a thirty-foot sloop or ketch. Used! Stopping here and there to hunt, fish and see the sights. I've always been more at ease under the bridge than atop it.
That or by RV. If by RV hopefully with another couple, (in their own RV!!), so the wives can shop when us boys sneak into the wilderness. I would tow a jeep.

Add to this taking the wife to SA, New Zealand or Australia. And while there....

So I'm like a doomsday prepper but I'm instead building a Hunting Hope chest.

Ygg, are you a sailor? The reason I'm asking is that there is a 32' Westerly Ketch in my backyard that belonged to my late father. At his passing I gave the boat to a cousin that sails. He might be amenable to additional crew that knows how to handle a "salty" boat.

Certainly no pro. I've owned a 26 Chriscraft and a 28 Morgan out Island in the past. Traded the Out Island for a son and and dad duties 13 yes ago. She's in Texas now. Used to tramp around lake Erie a bit when I was single. Spent5 days on a delivery crew bringing a boat from Bermuda to New York and that's my salty experience. These days it's my boy and two 11 foot fishing kayaks. Where does your cousin sail her if I might ask?

Lake Erie. Day cruises normally. He races his own boat on Wednesdays.

Well heck, he sounds like he knows a lot more than me. Racing requires a whole different skill set on top of just cruiseing around and swimming. I work M-F but weekends I get some time. Sometimes.

As for the Ruger I dismantled it today completely except for the firing pin assembly. I just removed that from the bolt.
I used a barrel cleaning paste to gently 'hone' the barrel. Really more of a good interior surface cleaning.
The safety mechanism was coated with light lapping compound, reinstalled and worked 100 times.
The rails scratching the brass were lightly worked with emery cloth to dull the sharp edges.
Using a green rotary tool tip on the Dremel and some polishing compound I polished the feed ramp.
The bolt assembly minus the firing pin assembly was worked about 150-200 times coated with lapping compound.
After that I removed the extractor claw and retaining band and throughly cleaned the parts, ditto for the rest of the action and barrel.
On reassembly the barrel retaining bolt was torqued to specs..95 ft lbs. This caused the magazine latch to settle in far better than when the gun had arrived.
(If your Ruger magazine floor plate is not closing nice and tight against the stock I suggest checking the torque of the retaining bolt. I had found the bolts retaining the barrel and trigger guard to be loose)
I also slightly rounded the safety lever as the edges are a bit snarky for my dainty little fingers. A dab of cold blue will blend in the wear marks nicely.

Now the gun feeds from the magazine like a champ. No hanging and no marring the brass. I ran bullets through the mag nice and fast several times without a hitch and while not 'smooth as silk' the action is much more like a nicely worn rifle. Also, I rifle smells like Hoppes as a rifle should.

I love the smell of #9 in the morning.

Decided I will do this with my other Hawkeyes as well just because it made a very noticeable difference with the African. Now I know what I'm doing today ...... maybe after the dog park.....

Good morning. On the torque settings it is inch/lbs not ft/lbs. The tourque specs for a small block chevy heads is 65 ft/lbs. 95 ft/lbs on that small screw would snap it off or strip the receiver.

Oops . You're a right that was a typo.
Hope nobody took my advice.
If I ever post any load data please ignore it for your own safety.

Congrats on the new rifle. You well documented your decision process and you chose wisely. Enjoy your new toy.
Africa and sailing... you have some great adventures ahead of you.

Thank you Sir,
I certainly hope so. Whatever happens I intend to enjoy it as much as possible.
It all about the journey.

Need is such a strong word...

Seriously, if you ever hunt elk on public land you will want him to drop to the shot. If not you may find someone else’s tag hanging on him. The ‘06 will kill an elk, the .375 will drop him where he stands.
Your absolutely right. I have shot several elk on public land in my home state of Colorado with my Browning A Bolt .338 Win. Mag. All one shot kills, cause I don't want to chase a wounded elk through the mountains and then have to haul it out 3 miles or more! My hunting buddy shot an elk three times at 25 yards with his '06 and it just stood there. All killing vital shots. The elk was dead, but just didn't know it. He also shot a cow moose at 25 yards four times with the same '06, and it just stood there. Same thing, it didn't know it was dead. But an angle shot at 200 plus yards? I don't want to chase wounded animals through the mountains. Just a thought?

if you shoot any animal on any land you should want it to drop to the shot.
any goal less is cowardly slackarsedness.
because even then it will not happen all the time.
if your goal is less you get a lot less.
responsible hunters take this seriously.

bruce,

Trying to figure-out if I agree or disagree with you, Bruce...

I reckon my goal is to destroy the heart with the first shot, or destroy the brain (depending on circumstances).

Sometimes destroying the heart can also break some major bone which is handy. If not, the bull could sprint forty to eighty metres. If so, it could make two steps.

A bloke needs to get good at reading the way an animal drops if brain-shooting if he wants to stay alive. And never trust an animal that drops instantly to a body shot! Heck, never trust any shot that drops an animal instantly, even if it all looks good - be ready!

Until this guy posts something on pay it forward free I would avoid him at all costs.

If it hasn't sold by next week I might be interested. Stock would have to be changed along with some other items. I'm already having a 416 Rigby built so money is a tad bit tight.

Hey pal! I'll take all the .375 bullets if they're available.
Thanks!
