Hello Lou

Welcome to the forum. I read your post and felt I needed to answer.

Your dream is achievable in the situation hunting finds itself presently. South Africa in particular hosts many outfitters offering hunting opportunities galore.

I could offer you the following:

Thaba Nyati Safaris

The Hunt

Step into the wild beauty of Limpopo’s malaria-free bushveld, where the day begins with birdsong and the promise of adventure. At Thaba Nyati Safaris, every hunt is tailored to your skill, style, and spirit of adventure. Whether you choose to track a Cape Buffalo on foot, wait silently at a hide, or set out on a vehicle-assisted stalk, each moment is crafted to deliver the true essence of fair-chase African hunting.

Our hunting grounds span the foothills of the Waterberg Mountains near Thabazimbi, offering rugged hills, open plains, and dense bush. With herds of Plains game we and manage, including over 500 Cape Buffalo on 3,600 hectares and access to more than 100,000 hectares of surrounding concessions, hunters are guaranteed both challenge and reward. No long drives to hunting areas needed.

The Lodge

After the excitement of the day, retreat to the comfort of your exclusive-use lodge, reserved only for your group. Surrounded by indigenous gardens, the lodge offers:

Five luxury en-suite bedrooms

Two welcoming lounges

A dining hall with fireplace

An outdoor lapa and bar for evenings under the stars

Satellite TV, Wi-Fi, and laundry service

Evenings at Thaba Nyati Safaris are about more than rest—they are about friendship, laughter, and sharing stories by the fire over hearty South African cuisine.

The Experience

Your safari is guided by licensed Professional Hunters, supported by skilled trackers and skinners. From the moment you arrive, all expectations are taken care of—game vehicles, trophy preparation in the field, catering, and even assistance with rifle importation and taxidermy delivery.

We pride ourselves on offering safaris that are not only exciting but also accessible. Whether you are an experienced hunter or embarking on your first African adventure, every hunt is designed with your abilities in mind.

The Land & Location

Located just 2.5 hours from Johannesburg’s OR Tambo International Airport, with no layovers or additional internal flights needed, Thaba Nyati Safaris combines convenience with vast, untamed wilderness. Our landscapes range from sweeping plains to rugged mountains, offering the perfect backdrop for an unforgettable African safari.

Packages & Seasons

Our main hunting season runs from March to October, though off-season hunts can be arranged on request. Packages are tailored and include:

Airport transfers

Rifle hire

Flexible day fees

Exclusions typically cover personal expenses, side trips, taxidermy, permit fees, and import costs.

Why Hunt with Us?

At Thaba Nyati Safaris, we don’t just offer hunting—we offer an experience where guests arrive as hunters and leave as friends. With exceptional Cape Buffalo hunting as well as Plains Game hunting, luxury accommodation, expert guidance, and a warm family atmosphere, your African safari will be a memory to treasure for a lifetime.

Hi,
I'm Lou. Thanks for accepting me to the forums.
I have dreamt of an African safari since I was 11 years old (Roosevelt, Ruarke, Hemingway).
I am retired now (finally). I still dream of that hunt very often.
Plains game (especially a kudu) and with maybe a buffalo, to boot. (I have been interested in the latter ever since I recently found out they are good eats. :D ).
Anyway, I look forward to chatting with you guys and gals.
Thank you again.
-Lou
Shoot the buffalo first, I shot mine on the last day and did not get to eat it. The guys after me would have had a great time.

Be careful of hunting Chewore South, the area has been decimated.....

Curious about this. I hunted Chewore South with D&Y in September and they did tell me it was there last hunt there.

Which outfits shot it out?
