Wanted to say thanks for allowing me to join. My son and i will be taking our first trip to South Africa in October 2018. I'm sure i will be asking a ton of questions, for advise from those of you who have done this before. Although I prefer to hunt with a bow I have taken my share of Whitetale deer with my trusty 30-06 rifle. I plan on taking my new Ruger Hawkeye African 300 win mag.

Welcome to AH, jonezy! Glad to have you join our community. I have the exact same .300 Win Mag.

Take Care,

Welcome to the forum Jonezy! Good for you taking your son to Africa! Now you’ll both be addicted:LOL:!

Welcome aboard jonezy. Hunting Africa with your son will be an experience neither of you will forget. Enjoy the planning, it is almost as much fun as the actual hunt itself. Like all of us, you will be thinking of a second trip while on the plane ride home. Will your son be using your "trusty" 0'-6?

Dear jonezy
Welcome to this great Forum. Enjoy the planning process of your upcoming and scheduled safari. The planning forms a huge FUN part of the safari.

No my son will be using his 300 win mag. Same make and model as mine. We usually can shoot each other's rifles just fine, so if any problems arrive with one rifle during travel we should be set

Welcome to AH.

Their is lots of good planning info on this site so read a lot and ask questions. I'll offer you two pieces of advice up front, pack half as much clothes as you think you'll need and practice shooting off of shooting sticks 3x more than you think need and you and your son will have a great safari.

Thanks for the advice. I have never really shot much off of sticks. I've always been more of an off-hand shooter. Kinda old school like that. We will definitely practice a lot.

Hi Jonezy,
300 winmag shoots like a dream. Here is my newest 300. Purposely built for long range hunting. Very nice long range opportunites here in south africa. Shout if you need some pointers.

Welcome! I too am taking my son on his first safari in 2018. I posted some questions and got lots of fabulous responses, mainly for the benefit of my son. I have been on multiple safaris, and was most interested on comments for things I may take for granted since I have been so often. You will find the posts under Africa Hunting section. As has been stated, this site is a wealth of information. Best of luck in your planning and preparation.

I'm unfortunately on a diet. Presently in VA hospital as Agent Orange finally caught up with me. Cancer and I no longer can speak. If all goes well I'll be out of here and back home in Thailand by end of July. Tough road but I'm a tough old guy. I'll make it that hunt.

Nice one there. I guided for mulies and elk for about 10 or so years in northern New Mexico.

Business is the only way to fly. I'm headed to SA August 25. I'm hoping that business isn't an arm and a leg. If you don't mind, what airline and the cost for your trip. Mine will be convoluted. I'll be flying into the states to pick up my 416 Rigby as Thailand doesn't allow firearms (pay no attention to the daily shootings and killings) so I'll have 2 very long trips.
