Blaser 500 Jeffery

After a shooting session with the 500 everything from 375 down feels like a 243.

No one has explained to you the "super model in a Gremlin" In the 1970's when the gas crisis hit the US hard the car manufactures rushed some small economy (Cheap) cars to market Ford had the Pinto. Chevy had the Vega, and American Motors Corporation had the Gremlin. Al were very junky cars. But the Gremlin was just plan UGLY. The guys and gals I went to school with that parents bought one would not be seen in it at high school.

Nice! I feel the same about the recoil. Shoot the 500 Jeffery first, everything after is a pussycat. Glad you got my old timer reference :)

I never said a word about the r8 until I shot one, though I have seen people singing its praises and never as much as held one.

I have heard many dislocate their jaws yammering on and on about how fast you can get multiple rounds out the end of the pipe and it has always made me wonder why the felt that to be so important? Is it because they just picked a round that at best could be the minimum that should be used? Or is it because their shooting stinks on ice?

Or is it just because they simply can't handle the recoil of anything bigger than the Queen of the Medium Bores like so many truly honest hunters here have admitted to ? How the hell would I know...... unless I took them to the range myself.

The 500 Schuller is a fine round.....what it come out of is insignificant to its stopping power.

Very nice rifle! As close as you can get to a double rifle in regards to rate of fire, and also very compact like a double. Plus you have 3 rounds at your disposal. I understand what you're saying about the narrow recoil pad. Nothing beats a wide pad that distributes the recoil over a broad portion of your shoulder.

A-Square did that with their stocks, it was really wide at the butt.
@USMA84DAB has a few of their stock blanks, last I knew he was selling them.

500 has had an upgrade - New large 1" decelerator pad, added extra weight in the butt stock and fore-end, Contessa rail, Leupold rings and a 1-4 Leupold VX Freedom scope. Rifle now weighs in at 11.9 pounds unloaded, the extra weight and decelerator pad really soak up the recoil alot better. Love this rifle now!

Congrats! 500J is a great caliber. Mine weighs 12 lbs with a Leupold 1.5-5x scope, Talley steel QR rings and a sling. 11 to 12 lbs seems to be the right weight unless you're totally insensitive to recoil (which I am not lol).

Nothing like a bit of weight to soak up recoil. I didn't really give it much thought until I spent some range time with pistols, and any added weight was very noticeable recoil wise. Used a ballasted smaller calibre rifle a few years ago and it was wonderful. The owner had been able to get the additional weight between the hands, which worked well.

Unfortunately extra weight must be carried, but no free lunches.

That stock looks very long. Has the pad been fitted to an un modified stock, or has the stock been shortened to accommodate the new pad ? Shortening an R8 synthetic stock would be a challenge.

And lastly, what encouraged you to choose the rail/ring combo over a Blaser made saddle mount ?

Only certain models. The professional hunter goes up to the big boys. The regular professional only goes to 375 HH. Wish I'd known that 3 yea

You can shoot anything you want in the aluminum, you just may not like it.

No the stock hasn't been modified, LOP is still fine for me. Went with the rail ring combo for 2 reasons - 1 it cost half as much as a genuine Blaser mount and 2 it is pretty much all I could find readily available at the time. The Contessa mounts/rails seem to be very well made, can't recommend them enough.

I have 3 Contessa mounts for my Swaro scopes.
They adapt the Swaro rail directly to the Blaser barrel.
Very fast, repeatable accuracy and about half the price of Blaser.

The Contessa that I use on my .375 barrel is not a rail mount. It has 30mm rings and uses a quick release to attach to the barrel recesses.

They are a good bit of gear aren't they! Id be surprised if Blaser sells many mounts now having to compete with Contessa.

Looks not like a good DG combination to me. Second shot will not happen before you got trampled or bitten. If you want to run you will most likely stumble. But maybe you can improve handling the recoil significantly.
