Hunted
US, South Africa
been reading on here for a couple of weeks now and decided to join so I can ask questions that I have about our upcoming SA hunt. and maybe in the future be able to give some advise to others in the same place I'm at right now.
been a moldmaker for 17 years and have hunted in NY for all of my life for just about everything this state has to offer. only went on one guided hunt so far that was in Maine for black bear and was unsuccessful. was planning a pronghorn hunt for this year but the other guys couldn't get their plans straightened out, so maybe next year.

the wife and I went to the PA Great American outdoor show this year and while looking at the mounts at this one table and seeing the prices, got to thinking that we would like to do a hunt in SA. so after some emails and checking with references, we sent in a deposit for may of 2017. we will be doing a plains game hunt for Kudu, impala, blesbok, and springbok. plan is for me to get the Kudu one impala and one springbok and the wife to get the blesbok, one impala and one springbok.
only travel the wife and I have done has been within driving range so we are a little apprehensive about flying halfway around the world with our rifles.

Welcome to the board from a fellow New Yorker.

Don't be worried about it. Yes you will read stories of all kinds of experiences, but the fact is most have no issues. 4 trips just to Africa and multiple countries/internal flights on each trip and I have never had a problem......

Flying from JFK? If so I can tell you exactly whats going to happen and what to expect as can a few other folks who post here.

Welcome to AH !

Ask questions and you will receive the answers on this forum! Welcome and good luck on your first trip. My son and I are making our first trip in July, 17.

Welcome! Plenty of time to plan and get comfortable for your May 2017 hunt. Start early, get your CBP 4457 forms done and think about a meet & greet service to help you get in and out of Joburg. Other option is to just rent rifles from your PH.

Welcome to AH Brewster6514! Lots to learn here and prepare for your hunt.

Mr. Brewster,
Congrats on booking your hunt. You are young enough to book many more.
I grew up hunting in way upstate NY, (40 mi. NW of Lake Placid).
Only advice I have for you is to have a solid taxidermy plan.
When the first animal is on the ground, your PH will ask you how you want it skinned, caped for shoulder mount or a full skin. It's just good to have an idea what you want before you start shooting.
Also, need to have a plan on which taxidermy you will use, US, vs RSA and your import plan, etc.
You and your wife will have a great trip, (once is not enough).

Bravo for taking the leap to head to Africa. Having just returned from my first safari, I can tell you I was nervous about my rifle (and suppressor). However, based on the articles on this site, everything went great!

Before you leave, make sure you take your rifle to Customs and Border Protection to complete your form 4457.

I highly recommend hiring @riflepermits.com or some other similar company to assist with the paperwork in Africa. We paid them to handle our rifle and for VIP pick up at the gate, right as we exited the aircraft. All in, about $200. The VIP pick up got us in the fast lane at customs/immigration (5 minutes to get through instead of 2.5+ hours). They lead us to the rifle pick-up area, I confirmed the serial number, signed some document, and out the door. This also took less than 5 minutes.

Here's some of Jerome's excellent guides:

I would be interested in it if you pass. Please send me the info on the gun shop if you do not buy it. I have the needed ammo and brass.
Thanks,
Ross
