RSA and Namibia are ok but I am not sure of other places. Ive been told it is better to leave it on the gun so it is part of the gun. African jail would not be fun.

Provided silencers are not controlled items in Moz, then no worries.
My 2c would be to check with his outfitter/PH on what the legal restrictions are silencers in Moz - as Philip says, African jails are well worth avoiding. Firearm-related violations are gold to African (customs) officials.

Your friends problem isnt Moz.. its the US (assuming he is from the US)...

suppressors are regulated items in the US.. you can indeed temporarily "export" them and then bring them back into the US with you.. but.. there is a process for doing that... if you violate that process and get caught.. the penalties can be pretty severe...

granted, in my experience most TSA and Customs agents don't know the actual process themselves.. and half of them wouldn't recognize what a disassembled monocore suppressor is while it sits in your bags...

but is it really worth the risk when all you have to do is fill out some paperwork?

for me.. its not worth the ass pain.. I'll just use or purchase a suppressor locally (not sure if this is possible in Moz)..

but legitimate/legal options are out there... so, why risk it?

Best check the laws of countries he is transiting as well. Eg. They are illegal in Canada.

I needed one this summer for my step daughters as they are very recoil and noise shy. I was still waiting on my stamps, and I never really got comfortable with the export process anyways. It’s one of those things where people do it all the time with no problem, but it could be a problem.

I had my friend in RSA pick one up for me before my hunt with the proper adapter for the rifle. It worked great. I just left it with my outfitter who I hunt with in RSA so I’ll have it when I go back. I think it cost me like 600 bucks. It’s a 30 cal rated up to .300 win.

Had outfitter buy a suppressor from Eurooptic Africa threaded 5/8x24 for wife on recent trip. less than $400. was flying through NJ and didn't want to take ours. If you can take one you must do CBP 4457

This may be Off Topic .. My 1/2 Brothers Father: Is Well to Do. He went through the Paperwork & Long Wait to Acquire A Legal Silencer. His Bank "I Refrain", After all the years of Business Cancelled him, will No Longer do Business. They Won't Give an Explanation & Don't Have to.

The only other thing that they thought may be related is his Offshore Commodity Investments?

I just yesterday fill out form #1149-0010 Application to temporarily import export certain national firearmsact (nfa) firearms per another member so we will see what happens, or next year I will just take it like I did last time

A lot of outfitters have supressors on their guns and you can avoid the hassle of taking guns all together. I just did that on a recent safari and it was great traveling without guns or checked baggage- a big deal in todays air travel.

I’m having a hard time believing there would be any correlation. My thought would be that it is something relating to his offshore commodity investments, or some other unrelated reason.

"African jail" and "ass pain" have been used in this thread. Both are things I do my best to avoid, would seem simple the answer to the original question of just throwing a gun part in your luggage like it was any other item.

Silencers or suppressors are not regulated in any way in SA
You could even get one fitted on your weapon while here
When u leave u could leave the suppressor here and just put the thread cap on your weapon and go home

@hurley - I suppose it depends on how good a "friend" this guy is to you...

If he were a wise man, I doubt he would trust the drivelings of an internet forum and pass it off as actual research on such a matter. However it sounds like he's made up his mind and if so, you will have little to no impact on his decision. Neither will we.

Get caught with a moderator in Australia and your feet won't even touch the ground on the way to the big house. You c a n legally have one if uou are a professional hunter but you have to ask is all the hoops worth the hassle and God help you if it went missing or was stolen.

today 10-31-22 just received my permit to take my suppressor to SA and back from ATF for my trip next April see post 2022 in Atlanta from the other day for more info
