A friend forwarded me this tweet today. It's a fairly good read.
Re: GreenlandSome say Trump has capitulated. Some say it's a slam dunkFrankly, I think those conversations are immaterial and side chatter, missing the actual point. What we have just seen is a decade of politicking play out at 32X speedOne thing is irrefutableEurope is pathetic at getting anything done. Strategically weak Prevaricating. Disunited. Naive. A confused gaggle of middle managers waiting for distinct leadership, all looking to one another for answers because nobody seems to have any. Clinging onto rules and treaties that are no longer fit for purpose rather than actually using instinct and confidence, as it is the only foothold the lemming-like bureaucrats have to help formulate decisions.Meanwhile naivety has underscored their every move. Reactionary politics rather than creative statesmanship. This was evident regarding relations with Russia and Iran. At one moment the script was all about getting gas and negotiating with terrorists. The next, it is sobbing to America to help rescue them from their errors of judgment. In the past quarter century, Europe has plunged itself into financial crisis, energy crisis and migration crisis. The current American Government sees that.I have no doubt that without Trump being, well, Trumpian, any conversation about Greenland would have taken a decade of hand wringing, while Europe's foes would have hungrily moved inThe bottom line is this: The West has collectively gained from the expediting of strategic decision making at a time when dithering and division is costlyNow we have a perky Nato, defending the High North, having been cattle prodded into action. We have a crumbling Iranian regime. We have conversations about national sovereignty. As a result, we will all be safer, and I hope, stronger. And for that, we should be grateful. It is striking how this HR style of 'leadership' has permeated expectations. It now dictates the media 'take' on everything. Strength is regarded as dangerous, and we live with a non-pragmatic Disneyfication of Global affairs. Bad guys are bad. Good guys are saints. Any nuance is not permitted without childish rebuke. Too many seem to lack basic political EQ. They would be far better suited as office workers, not leaders. In a rapidly changing world, Trump is both a symptom, and a cure. But at times that medicine is going to taste bitter.
