Gold is the safe haven when users start losing trust in Fiat currencies. The only way Fiat currency (currency not tied to any real substantive physical item) works is trust in the whole system.

At this time Countries with the most stable currency only print the amount of cash that they have an equal amount of physical item that their currency is tied to.

From what I have read he went off script - as usual - at Davos today, and parts of it were condescending to various allies and other parts had people scratching their heads. Some walked out before he was finished.

Very common for him to go off script. I believe it's because he simply can't read the script. I remember watching him stumble through reading stuff off the monitors during his first administration. Really bad. Autism or poor preparation or simply illiterate? Looking at what he posts online I kinda think the latter. Seriously.

It's very hard to bargain with people you have majorly pissed off with threats ... unless you can throw something they would really like in the deal. Being the big shot "dealmaker," Trump should know this. I guess he could offer to resign. Don't know about changing the Danes attitude toward US, but I expect news of Trump calling it quits would add a thousand points to DOW overnight.

I'm not sure what kind of earth shattering deal NATO could make for Greenland. It belongs to the folks in Greenland and Denmark, not NATO. And what kind of deal, short of a total land grab, could be better than the existing treaty between US and Denmark in place since 1951? Build US defense establishments on Greenland and let Denmark continue looking after Greenlanders' welfare ... and paying for it with Danish currency instead of US dollars. If the Danes were happy with that deal, why not stick with it? Win win for everyone. We all know what this nonsense was about: Donald Trump needing to feed his ego.

Anyway, I'll wait for confirmation from NATO that something has actually changed. At this point just saving the 1951 treaty for US might be an accomplishment. But not one Trump can take credit for. Just watch him try.

The good news - really good news! - is Trump is taking himself out of action re any further "negotiations" for Greenland. Wonder how long that will last. Rubio and Vance won't do anything ... but if they can handle that and keep Trump muzzled in the back seat maybe one of them can get the Peace Prize.

The Greenland deal is good news all the way around. The market reacted positively. No new tariffs.

Hopefully we haven’t permanently damaged our relationships beyond repair.

Usually I leave my investments handling to the experts but I am watching the markets and currencies VERY VERY closely today.

Almost a year ago when Euro was $1.03 I made a bet against the dollar. Euro is $1.17 today. Not a bad decision.

Have any of you listened to his speech at Davos? I have not. I would like to know what your take on it was, if so. I have been reading about the reactions of some of those in attendance.

I'm sure it's on the net somewhere but be forewarned, he rambled on for over an hour so unlikely you'll want to sit through the whole thing. Apparently several in attendance walked out ... probably for a potty break. Like that slap-myself-on-the-back news conference earlier this week that lasted an hour and twenty minutes. Ugh! It was also mostly incoherent rambling. I saw some excerpts. Very painful to watch. He provided lots of ammo for the late night pundits.

I had read in several places that people walked out, and not to use the bathroom. I also read he went 30 minutes over his allotted time.

Looks like 13%, correct? (I'm not real good with math). Just got a call on Monday from my investments gal and she said I made almost 9% return during the year and I thought that was pretty good. Curious what it costs to invest in currencies? Must be a fee for buying and selling? Not going to ask about the taxman . I watch the currencies closely but only US vs Canadian dollar because it has such an impact on my cross-border lifestyle. Not for investing but Canadian dollar did take a jump the last couple of days. I guess because currency investors were looking for other options to get away from US dollar.

Something big, I’m sure, happened in Davos. Trump has turned over the talks to his lieutenants. Now it’s just a waiting game to see what the real deal is. I’ve not the faintest notion what it might be, but it sure will be interesting.
