My second safari is coming up soon this May where I will be hunting buffalo and maybe a few night critters in Limpopo. That being said I’m already thinking about the future. The more I read about Uganda and the nostalgic stories of the pearl of Africa the more I want to go. The same goes for Cameroon. I’m just looking for adventure and game that maybe you could only get in those areas. It’s hard to lean on the budget for either. It looks like like you can do a six day hunt with maybe some add ons. As for Cameroon what’s feasible. Can you go hunt for 20,000 or is that out of the picture. Feel free to private message me.

Cameroon offers some shorter Safaris for PG hunting. That would be doable with the budget you are suggesting. Uganda is what I've heard a sportsmen paradise with game rich areas.

Never been to one of these destinations but if you are not hunting LDE or Bongo as you are implying I would choose Uganda.

Reach out to @Spear Safaris Ernest Dyason. He can answer any questions you have and can fix you up

@JKO HUNTING SAFARIS conducts hunts in both Cameroon and Uganda.

If you're looking for Bongo, Lord Derby Eland, Sitatunga, Dwarf buffalo and the Savannah Buffalo, then Cameroon suits that. As well as a number of the various duikers. Bongo and LDE for $20K.....not thinking that will happen. Perhaps for the buffalo and other smaller PG species.

Uganda is another place for Sitatunga, but those would for the swamp dwellers. It is also the place for Nile buffalo. You will also find great Defassa Waterbuck, warthogs, bushbuck, Patterson's eland, Grant's zebra (absolutely beautiful species of zebra btw), the giant West African Impala as well as other PG species. A $20K budget will get you a number of those species but not all. Uganda is a little like Tanzania in that the longer a hunting license you buy, the more species you may hunt.

I've not been to Cameroon, but I have been to Uganda. It is an absolutely beautiful place to hunt. I hope to go back someday. If you'd like more information on the hunts JKO offers in those countries, please let me know.

You could do a PG hunt in both for under $20k. However, Cameroon was one of more unique adventures I’ve had. I’m glad I went and was successful but I’m not sure I’d go back now. There is a lot to go wrong. A short hunt could be problematic with CamAir. I also question what will happen to the country when their 92 year old president dies. The country isn’t getting new outfitters and areas have been turned in. If you go to Cameroon, you need to hunt premium areas with PHs that have a history hunting there. The poaching and pressure on areas is unlike I’ve seen elsewhere. I’m going to Uganda this April. I think it’s more straightforward. There are only 4 outfitters in country KOS, Lake Albert safaris, Uganda wildlife safaris, and a black outfitter near lake Mburo I think primarily sells quota to other outfitters and independent PHs. Each outfitter holds primary areas that offer something slightly different than the other then cross list the other outfitter’s areas to offer all species in Uganda. All references I speak to on Uganda have positive things to say. Cameroon some positive, some negative, some very interesting. Here’s my report from 2023.

I’ve looked into Uganda, what’s not to like! 2 bushbuck, 2 reedbuck, dik-dik, oribi, hartebeest, kob, sitatunga, 2 buffalo, waterbuck, 30”impala and more. Plus you can hunt several different areas relatively easily.
Some of the bookings are confusing to me and my simple mind. You pay a substantial trophy fee deposit for the game on whatever license you get, I have no desire for some of the animals and the deposits add up to more than the deposit. I may be reading too much into it though.

I booked with KOS. I found the pricing structure much easier explained over the phone/in person rather than looking at the sheet. I’d suspect same with Uganda wildlife safaris pricing. I find their printed price structure confusing also. Lake Albert pricing structure looks pretty straightforward.

I’ve done both forest and Savannah in Cameroon for the primary big species with JKO. I loved both. I intend on returning to the Savanah to pick up the species I didn’t take the first time…roan, heartebeest, oribi, reedbuck and a few others, maybe python…then Forrest for buffalo and elephant at some point. Asides the airports, everything I’ve experienced in Cameroon has been awesome, JKO does an amazing job at mitigating issues. I intend on Uganda at some point but I can not imagine anywhere being as wild as Cameroon.

Can you bring the python back. Are you going to stick your leg in the hole as bait?!!!!!

I have hunted both places.
By far, Cameroon is the most remote and a challenge for a hunter who has not been everywhere.

In summary -
Uganda - safe, good infrastucture, plenty of big buff, a chance for sitatunga, and a variety of planes game that are fairly easy to hunt. The only really difficult hunt is sitatunga. There are good operators here and the country is unique. I would strongly suggest doing the forest/mountain gorilla tour in the far west of the country. The hunting is easy and you will see a lot of the country. But, seeing mountain gorillas is a serious highlight. Your outfitter can arrange it.

Cameroon - great hunts for Lord Derby Eland and Bongo. They are two totally different hunts. The LDE hunt is in the north, in the savannah and is classic spot and stalk. You can hunt roan and other species.
For bongo, you are in for a slog. The hunt area is a 16 hr drive to get to, then you are in the rain forest and it is seriously dense. A bongo hunt is seriously fun but challenging. You may get a chance at forest sitatunga or forest buff and duikers but it is a seriously tough hunt.

The LDE hunt is superb however, getting there is not easy. You fly to the capitol than take a local flight to the area near Garou. Nothing is certain until your plan lands. We have been there three times and had challenges each time. However, it is worth the trouble if you can mentally handle the weird things that will happen.

Usually, hunters got to Zimbabwe for dangerous game first, or Mozambique to get a taste of the real deal. Buffalo in South Africa is not the Zambezi Valley or Savey Conservancy.

Uganda is extremely fun and safe. Cameroon is a mental challenge but the hunting is fun.

Redfish, there is still the seven summits, transversing Antarctica alone on foot. Walking across the Amazon rainforest.

And then there is the taming of the wild blue hair Karen of Minnesota. An aggressive subspecies of the human female.

I have no interest in the blue haired karen.

I hunted with Ade Langley in Zim. He was stating KOS at the time. Great guy and a great hunter. You’ll have a great time.

I have hunted both. Uganda is awesome. Cameroon is a longer story.

I hunted Uganda in 2024 with Abe Langley's KOS Safaris (Tom Holloway, PH). Abe runs an excellent operation. Here is a Hunt Report (story really) if you are interested.

After that hunt report was written, I went back to Uganda with Abe and Tom and also hunted a Sudanese Roan, Chandler's Mtn Reedbuck and what will likely be a new world record Bohor Reedbuck (if I ever get it officially scored).

Once you've hunted Africa a bit, I would highly recommend Uganda. Do a side trip to trek with the Mountain Gorilla's, consider some fishing and at least stop and have lunch overlooking the headwaters of the Nile.

Cameroon was less than great. I did a plains game hunt for the endemic species, which is within your price range. There are some pretty cool endemic species in Cameroon. Unfortunately, other than the species available to hunt, Cameroon is, well, it sucks. That is of course just an opinion.

The internal airlines only sort of work, and only when they can/want too. Many people are openly hostile to American's, and you really do not want to venture around outside of the hunting areas. In the savannah, which is where you can hunt the plains game, the camps are getting pretty beat up. Poaching is a serious issue/problem, and the lack of resources for infrastructure is readily apparent. Most of the plains game is really an add-on to the LDE hunts. You can do it (I did), but you really need to know what you are getting into.

Cameroon is also incredibly hot. During the plains game season, we consistently hunted in 112-115 degree temperatures and its not much better at night, especially without air conditioning (see lack of upkeep and infrastructure). Those are pretty normal temperatures and hunting conditions. It sounds like an adventure (and it is), but you really have to want it. You really need to go with a highly credible outfitter, and by that I mean an outfitter that has been vetted recently, and can provide references from very recent hunts. Do not rely on anyone's "long-standing reputation." Verify. Conditions change pretty quickly in Cameroon.

Jacques Spammer from JKO Safaris has been doing some LDE and forest hunts in Cameroon and their operation is highly recommended. Jacques was pretty helpful to my wife and I when we ran into a little trouble in Cameroon in 2024, and he did not have to help. I really appreciated his time. You need someone with a lot of Cameroon experience, and who is there and on the ground with you, to make those hunts successful - and safe.

There are a lot of interesting places in Africa. Once you have been on a safari of 2, you'll start to get your footing and then down the rabbit hole you'll likely go. And this forum is a good place to find some miscreant enablers willing to help you down that hole.

Hi,

We ve been operating our own area in Cameroon for the past 20 years. Some of AH member here hunted with us already. If you are interested we can work something out together.

Best regards,

Romain

Hi PaulB. Would you be interested in another WJ Jeffery .450/.400 NE 3". It's an extractor model and in superb condition, cased as well. Made in 1908. The rifle is here in Texas.
