Afternoon all,

Great to join the forum! I'm a keen stalker, clay and game shot based in the UK. No immediate plans for an Africa trip, but like most hunters it's on the bucket list and hopefully the right oppurtunity will arise in the not too distant. I've joined to learn a bit more about the whole endeavour and the gear, as well as drool over the pictures and stories.

Currently shooting .270 mostly, but I am on the look out for a 9.3x74R double rifle. Also quite like the idea of a 470NE at some point.

So, that's it really. Hope to see you around!

Welcome to AH Alistair! Glad you found us.

Welcome to AH! Please share your hunting experiences in the U.K.

Welcome sir!

Cheers guys.

My background comes originally from beating on local game shoots and air rifles, starting around 12. I got into shooting through a clay pigeon shooting club at secondary school and I continued to shoot competitively at Uni. Even today, most of my shooting is clay pigeons, and I tend to do that a couple times a month. I later got some permissions for rabbit control and moved into rimfires. I joined a fullbore rifle club about 3 years ago and do a couple of rifle competitions including running boar and a 'sporting rifle' discipline. A few guys at the range got me into the stalking side of things.

Apart from rabbits, my current rifle hunting experience is all based on trips to Scotland after hinds. I've been twice now, shooting 6 days total and I have another trip booked for January. I've also had an invite to shoot Muntjac and Roe closer to home. As for shotgun shooting, I used to be in a small local syndicate as a half gun and shot around 5 small days a year. That had to stop ue to a change of location for a job, but I tend to take 2 or 3 days a season with guys from the rifle club.

Welcome, Alistair! We'll let you know the next time we get together in London.

Welcome aboard Alistair. You found the best site on the web if you want to learn about hunting in Africa. After looking about a bit you will soon see that there are "subject matter experts" for just about every aspect of the hunting equation willing to share their knowledge with you. With your 270 and either one of the other rifles you mentioned should suffice for your first trip. I'd lean more towards the 9.3 x 74 since it is more versatile. This site is addicting, I hope you enjoy it as much as we do..

Is this rifle sold? If not what is the weight of it and do you know if there is enough difference in diameter between the 35W and the 9.3 to allow for a rebore to a 9.3x62 which is what I am after?
Thanks,
Gary (Just down the road in Springfield)

Forgive me if this is the incorrect area, I signed up to this forum just now because I wanted to be on the list to purchase a copy of your autobiography. Please feel free to pass my information along to whomever is selling. Thank you so much. I look forward to it!
I like the Tillie in my picture. They are supposed to fit loose (2 fingers inside hat band), have mesh for cooling, and hold their shape after washing.
