Hello, my name is Hunter, and I'm a newer hunter. (Ironic name I know). I come from a mostly non-hunter family and was only able to start hunting in the last couple of years (once I was able to get my fathers cousin to teach me the ropes). I had wanted to hunt for a long time before and have now enjoyed two hunts (White Tail and Elk) and am excited for goose soon. I've come to really grow a passion for hunting. I spend much of my free time learning everything I can about hunting, the outdoors, conservation and animal biology. I've watched many documentaries and read many books about both western hunting as well as African hunting. Books such as "Death in the Long Grass", "Horn of the Hunter", "American Bison", "Comfort Crisis", "The Naturalist", etc. have given me an amazing look into different hunting and some of the important people in conservation.

I've come to find that I can almost never get hunting off the mind. My questions here are about getting into a career in the field. I've looked into being a western guide and learning from a good outfitter, but my real dream is to become a PH with a good outfitter as well as work on African conservation. The process to become a PH is a little hard to understand, I've found a lot of good info on this site yet still find myself wondering how exactly to go about it. I'd ideally like to apprentice under an experienced PH (preferably in Tanzania because I know a little Swahili). My questions are as follows... any information and/or help is massively appreciated.

- How does one become a PH?
- Can you apprentice as a PH?
- What are some of the less talked about things to expect?
- Do I have to/should I go to one of the wildlife schools in Africa?
- Are there any outfitters out there that can tell me what they generally look for in a PH candidate?
- What kind of room is there to grow a career?
- How hard is it to get a spot as a PH with an outfitter?
- How/where to apply?

I'm sure there are more things I would like to ask but haven't come to my head currently. Thanks for any help.

P.S. If anyone needs help with firearm related questions I'm sure I can help (unless it's about shotguns).

Having hunted with Mynhard, I am familiar with this school. Some info on his school here:

Welcome to AH! Presuming you’re an American, you may wish to talk with Nathan @Bullet Safaris. His experience would be quite beneficial to learn from.

Welcome to AH @Hunter M ! And good luck with your search in becoming a PH!

Welcome to AH! We look forward to you sharing your stories!

Hunter M, welcome to the forum and wishing you the best of luck in your career pursuit!

Welcome aboard Hunter. I don't "mean" to get personal or rain on your parade but there are a lot of better paying professions and or jobs out there. I understand what it means to follow one's dreams but one has to be able to live as well. Some of the members here are licensed Professional Hunters but make their living doing something different. Brickburn for one, comes to mind. You might try reaching out to him via a PM. Another point to ponder is whether gaining the knowledge and putting in the time would be rewarding to you as an avocation rather than a vocation.

BTW what part of Nebraska?

Welcome to AH !

Welcome to the forum-Nebraska is one of my favorite places on earth! Never ending opportunities there for hunting. Good luck with your endeavors

Hello Hunter M,

Khomas Highland Hunting Safaris of Namibia, welcomes you to the greatest forum on earth.

I do not pretend to know how the regulations and politics of any country works, including my own country.
However, becoming a PH in Africa is something that many of us members here have at times daydreamed about.
I do hope you are able to make that goal a reality for yourself.

Best Regards,
Velo Dog.

I understand what you are saying. I've already thought about a couple things I could try doing in order to make a more livable income. However my main goal really is to just learn and live the life, I look at this as more of a possible lifestyle than just a job / career . There are many things I think I could learn other than just the hunting from such experience and that is what I truly seek. That being said it is not very kind to live on a low income and I do find myself having a liking of some expensive things...

I am from Omaha!
