Excited to be here, and more to the point, excited to be planning my first trip to Africa.

Headed to South Africa in late April and May of 2021! Plains game the first time with Hendrik Botha and Matwetwe Safaris.

Thanks for having me!

Giday scoober 78 and welcome to the A H forums where all types of guns and hunting related addictions are nurtured and enabled.

Welcome to AH Scoober - Congrats on booking your trip! Lot's of good info here.

Welcome to AH scoober78!

Welcome to AH and congratulations on booking your first safari. What rifles do you plan on taking? What critters?

Welcome, to AH and congrats on booking your first safari. Make sure you start practicing off of shooting sticks and you buy a journal so you can do up a hunt report on your return.

Welcome aboard scoober78. There is lots of good info. on AH that will help you plan your trip so that there are no surprises at the end of it. The search function is a good place to start. Have you been introduced to shooting sticks? You will be expected to use them in Africa.

Welcome to AH !

All, thanks for the welcome! I have shot off sticks, and took a Bison this winter with them, but plenty more practice is in store. I plan on ordering a set this month and working hard over the next 13 months to get to my expected level of speed and comfort. I am my own harshest critic in terms of shooting, and hold myself to high standards of both speed and accuracy.

Game on the docket: I was intially intending to chase a mix of Cape Buf and PG, but am going to stick with just plains game this trip. I don't want to compromise either hunt, or our follow-on travels in South Africa by rusing any portion of the experience. As for specific animals, here's what I've come up with as my highest interest.

Greater Kudu
Wildebeest (Black)
Gemsbok
Springbok
Impala

I am very open to the "spirit of the hunt" selection however, and intend to work with what the Dark Continent provides and my PH recommends and don't feel at all like I need to check every box to be successful. I am also excited about Blue Wildebeest and Warthog. Quality is everything to me, and taking mature to past-mature animals is the goal. While it would be cool to talk SCI Bronze, that is not what I am about.

Rifles. Standard newby PG dilemna. I have a Sako A7 7mm mag that I shoot exceptionally well and am comfortable with. It shoots 150 TTSX and 160 AccuBonds into under 3/4 minute beyond 600 yards (and yes, I've tested it...) That rifle is definitely going. I'm also, of course, intrigued by a .375 H&H. It would give me quite alot of flexibility and give me an intro into a rifle that I can use for DG if an opportunity comes up, or I change my mind while there. It would allow me to shoot a medium bore to assess whether I feel like I can comfortably handle a .404./.416 down that line... I don't own one, but have looked at quite a few...I am not a fan of the stocks on the CZ 550 series, as they are a bit thick to my hands, and generally, feel that being comfortable with a quality rifle and proficient is more important than buying off on the CRF/PF debate. I have a line on an HS Precision 2000 in .375, but it is substantially pricier than say, a Winchester M70 Alaskan or Safari, or a Sako Kodiak. I would LOVE to hear everyone's thoughts on this.

So excited to be planning this trip, and thrilled to be a part of this community.

Hi Scoober

welcome to AH. You wil have a great time on the forum.
Sounds like you have a great hunt planned. Most important thing is to bring a gun you are comfortable with.

I picked up a SAKO 375 Brown Bear a while ago. And i can tell it works. Its been put through its paces and im more than happy with it.

Scoober78, welcome to the AH forum! I believe you have made the correct decision for your first Africa hunt by taking a rifle you know well. When you return, you will know much more about Africa hunting and the entire process.
After my first safari taking only PG, I returned home testing several friends heavier calibers. Reading many articles, talking to highly experienced people, and admitting I don’t like the recoil, nor handle .40+ rifles nearly as well as .375, I purchased one. It since has been all I take to Africa. I practice between 300 and 500 rounds a year preparing for each adventure. I’m very happy after 4 trips with my choice.

You may not be as sensitive to recoil and may be able to get on target and fire a backup shot faster than this old man. But for me getting two shots off in less time than one and trying to get resighted with a bigger bore was my decision maker.

You’re going to have a grand adventure! Enjoy the planning as well!

I love to see people get excited about hunting down here and wish you all the best in your quest.
The 7mm Rem Mag will do fine but I suggest finding the heaviest bullet it will group well and sticking to that. Those 160gr Accubonds will do just fine.

Your targets are all classic solid choices but getting a good to great Kudu is one of my goals and I have been unlucky over the years.
Best of luck to nail a proper bull.

Welcome aboard!

I'm unfortunately on a diet. Presently in VA hospital as Agent Orange finally caught up with me. Cancer and I no longer can speak. If all goes well I'll be out of here and back home in Thailand by end of July. Tough road but I'm a tough old guy. I'll make it that hunt.

Nice one there. I guided for mulies and elk for about 10 or so years in northern New Mexico.

Business is the only way to fly. I'm headed to SA August 25. I'm hoping that business isn't an arm and a leg. If you don't mind, what airline and the cost for your trip. Mine will be convoluted. I'll be flying into the states to pick up my 416 Rigby as Thailand doesn't allow firearms (pay no attention to the daily shootings and killings) so I'll have 2 very long trips.
