Politics

The VRA case was heard by the court yesterday. This has the potential to change the midterms with Republicans potentially picking up 10-15 seats due to redistricting.

To me it looks like Sotomayer, Kagan and Jackson don’t want it changed.

Thomas, Alito, Gorsuch and Kavanaugh want it done away with completely.

Roberts and Barret want it partially changed and limited. Roberts always wants to split the baby. Barret just seems wishy washy.

The timing of the release will be critical in giving States enough time to redistrict. States may decided to redistrict prior to the decision in anticipation of a decision.

At a minimum it looks like changes to the VRA will be made in some fashion. It could come down to how well Thomas can persuade a majority to strike the VRA down.

What a fitting in your face way to leave the Court and give Trump a few months to fill the position.

We in Alabama lost a republican seat due to court ordered redistricting, it’s crazy that today’s republicans are paying for the sins of yesterday’s democrats. Our representative said he thought it wouldn’t be in time to redraw districts before 2028.

I think the world of Justice Thomas.. but I do hope he decides to retire SOON.. while the republicans 100% know they control the house, senate, and the white house..

the mid terms are looking pretty good... but.. in American politics you just never know.. and I'd much prefer that the opportunity to replace him with another solidly conservative justice is taken advantage of rather than having to play give and take political games if he waits until later...

At 40 minutes, this is a bit long to listen to, however it is time well spent. If you haven't read the book, "Freakonomics," you should.

Agree with you on the retirement. Alito may be the first to go then Thomas. You don’t want them to hang around like RBG.

I think Trump learned his lesson on nominating slightly right justices. I don’t think he wants to do that again. Of course the senate makes the final decision. Getting an originalist like Thomas and Alito is tough the way the senate is right now. You only need two more like Collins and Mirkowsky to shut you down. Thankfully Romney is gone. With Vance you can live with one other.

There are some good originalist Circuit Judges but most are in their 50’s+. At this point I think trump would prefer someone younger for longevity reasons. Perhaps an Andy Oldham or an individual not currently in the judiciary.

We will see. The time for Justice retirements is normally after the session which ends mid July. That doesn’t leave a ton of time, especially if a nominee was not vetted properly and has a problem. That said I would bet Warrington has a handful of names prevetted and ready to go.

Grand Jury indicted John Bolton

So two Republicans and one Democrat indicted so far.

Wonder why the democrats are so angry about indictments. You would think they would be happy. :ROFLMAO:

Evidently the WMD’s were in Bolton’s file cabinets/servers the entire time. :sneaky:
Indictments are really nothing. Too many of these dog & pony shows. I won't be impressed until a whole bunch of the swampers are in prison.
I won't hold my breath. Not in today's judicial cesspool of paid off Judges.

I think Comey and James are in EDVA which is a blue jury pool although better than the district.

Bolton is Maryland which is not great either.

It sounds like James and Bolton are strong cases. Not so sure on Comey so no clue how the chips will fall.

It also sounds like a grand jury is impaneled or will be impaneled in southern district of Florida. Probably Ft Pierce. If DOJ feels they have a conspiracy case, the defendants may rue the day they raided Mar a Lago and allowed the conspiracy to fall into the jurisdiction. Ft Pierce isn’t the redest part of Florida but it should get a jury pool that will deliver convictions if DOJ can prove the cases.

There could be 20-30 people indicted in Florida. If that is the case it would be surprising if a couple of people or possibly more didn’t flip.

As some Democrats said during the lawfare against Trump. The process is part of the penalty. Whatever the case it will be expensive. I doubt you could get a big law attorney to take a case through trial for less than 500k. Probably more than a 1m. On the other hand they may take a case like this pro bono. Don’t be surprised if there are a number of go fund me’s or if an individual like Reid Hoffman funds all the defenses himself.

It may be an interesting 2-3 years. I don’t think Trump or Bondi will let it slide like Rosenstein and Barr.

Exactly. Ask Trump associates from the first term. That alone is meaningful turnabout.

Agree.....Call me when the hangings are scheduled.

With tomahawks now on the table for Ukraine, Im guessing the Uk-Russia war is going to continue on for a bit longer..

We'll see if Trump follows through and sends the missiles.. but even just a couple of dozen tomahawks could put a serious hurting on Russia.. youre talking about something that can travel 1500+ miles and deliver a 1000lb warhead or 166 bomblets.. capable of taking out large ships, large buildings, etc..

a single strike on a bomber base for example could cost the Russians hundreds of millions of dollars in assets and set back their strategic capabilities a decade..

Seems to be changing his mind again about tomahawks.....here we go again....

As I have repeatedly stated, I am a huge fan of arming Ukraine to the teeth. My concern with the Tomahawk is the mission planning and support necessary for successful strikes. An enormous amount of intel goes into route planning- unlike an ATACMS missile which flies a point to point ballistic trajectory. It will take a lot of US direct support to successfully launch Tomahawks against deep Russian assets.

They seem to have good success with their Flamingo, and I've wondered if it wouldn't be better to help them in their efforts with something indigenous. Plausible deniability is going to be more important politically as Putin appears to be losing in the eyes of his own people.
