Trophy Warthog question

Interestingly, when this thread started, I asked AI, where are the biggest warthogs to be found, and AI mentioned Uganda, as one of the top countries!

Uganda is climbing to the top of my last of next African country to hunt.

SO they are indeed ivory, ive heard both ways , with no import problems that is a plus, there use to be a fantastic ivory museum in Maui , before the big fire wiped out the water front area, the carving and scrimshaw the old whaling vessel sailors did was unbelievable, as I recall One ship left MASS. and didnt return for 2 years. sorry I got off subject!

I haven’t seen a good warthog in years….
Many safaris without seeing a Big Boar….seen a lot of pigs but no big males really.
Saw a monster in South Africa right outside a protected area (15-16”+++) and missed a running shot.
That was probably 6 safaris ago… seems like areas are rare that hold a good number of big males. I think many areas hit by drought at times

We jumped a large warthog during our hunt in Limpopo while stalking a nyala. May have just been dusty but he looked to be a brown color but boy he had some tusks. Ironically, when he jumped up and took off m, he not only scared us, but also jumped the nyala I now have on the wall

I like hunting Warthogs, and if I see one that is worth taking, I'm going after. My first one was in Limpopo, and my second was in the Eastern Cape, and it was a target of opportunity.

I have been told, and this makes sense, areas with sand rather than harder dirt tend to have more long tusk warthogs. Not always a matter of genetics as much as terrain.

I was told the same thing. When my PH saw the Warthog and the size of the tusks, he didn't hesitate on telling me that we needed to take him.

Took my first in the Eastern cape in March and he had a huge body on him and was full of character. The tusks were an afterthought as age and body size came first! Still impressive tusks and a very memorable first pig!

it is a combo of a few factors
soft soil, genetics, food supply. they are the first to leave or die in a drought. and fences of any kind do not keep warthogs so they move around at will

One thing I find very interesting about Warthog is not jist the tusks, but the mane that some have.

Some Warthogs have fairly thick hair covering the entire body, and some have almost none, and some have a huge long mane, and some almost none.

I've heard many in Zim have a huge orange colored mane that's quite attractive especially on a full body mount.

I’ve shot a lot of warthogs. I can’t say I see much difference between them. Any slight color differences would be because of the soil. The Namibian warthogs had the shortest manes I’ve seen. Both my Uganda warthogs had the most impressive manes and largest body size I’ve seen. The others all fell somewhere in between.

I’ve taken a lot of really nice warthogs. I’d still be very happy to take that one. Nice thing about warthogs is trophy fee isn’t too expensive. Take 2 or 3 if you can. No reason to pass up a good one that gives an opportunity.

Was my first African animal and for a $450 trophy fee I couldn’t say no!

I went a whole 2 weeks and never saw 1 boar, only sows with piglets, the afternoon of the last day when I was packed for the trip home as we were “done” this hog came around, with a longish shot but a perfect behind the shoulder and DRT response he was trophy enough that I was satisfied. Icing on the cake you could say.

Even my girlfriend in High School didn't have hair like that!

But she's 62 now and Italian, so her mustache probably comes close.

Just a personal observation through the years…
I’ve never seen a fat pig with big tusks.

My heaviest pigs had small tusks. My biggest tuskers were old and skinny.

South Africa gets hammered by hunters with many taking warthogs. Add in it’s a frequent hunting destination for European and Spanish hunters who often like to shoot a bunch of 1 or 2 species (warthogs being a favorite) and it would be near the bottom of my list for places to hunt a truly big pig.

I’d focus on countries like Uganda, Mozambique, and Tanzania targeting areas with softer soil, and less rocks. If South Africa or Namibia were my only options I’d also target the areas that are less rocky to maximize my chances.

Did anybody get 16 inch warthog and where?

Yes. Of over 200 warthogs collected (a good number of those were young and specially selected for the pot), this is my best. Right hand tusk = 16 & 1/8 inches, total SCI score 41 & 4/8. Taken on a large cattle ranch outside of Chivhu, Zimbabwe. I got a quick glimpse of it while hunting impala for biltong but didn't get a shot. I hunted for this specific pig five weekends over three months. With lots of diesel driving to and from Chivhu and precious hunting time invested with no sightings it haunted me. I had some sleepless nights fearing it had fallen to a poacher's snare, or a leopard, or died of old age. Fortunately, this obsession came to a fruitful closure. I have seen three that were without a doubt bigger . . that I'll never get out of my head . . . one in the Zambezi valley that I couldn't shoot as my warthog license was already filled with what was very good for the area, an 11 & 1/2 incher, another while driving along the highway just north of Beitbridge, Zimbabwe that had absolutely huge circular tusks, WAY over 16 inches, and one in the desert of eastern Ethiopia that I estimate was in the 16.5 to 17.5 inch range that unfortunately evaporated before I was presented with a shot. I have some very big pickups which are another story I must write up sometime.
