The One Piece of Gear You Didn’t Know You’d Need in Africa

I have dosed a lot of horses over the years with Ivermectin. I can't get past using it to worm horses to take it myself!
Ivermectin is routinely given in Africa and other places in the world to combat among other things:
  • Parasites such as fleas, ticks, worms, and intestinal flukes
  • Viral infections such as flue, cold, covid
  • Malaria, Dengue fever, and other types of micro-organism based disease
When I first went to get some, I was told that I had to have a prescription from a Dr. But, I spoke to a pharmacist who said that the same apple flavored oral medication that is used to worm horses is what I would get if I had a prescription. Amazon has it for about $12 a tube. There are at least a dozen doses in one tube. Later, a Doctor I know confirmed that this stuff is great for travel to strange places. If you get exposed or feel sick one dose is all it takes and the side effects are minimal.

As a Eastern woods hunter I love to squirrel hunt in the warm later summer/fall months. A parasite that we call Turkey Mites is the spawn of Satan as far as I am concerned. They are not everywhere but where they are, they are BAD! Insect repellant will prevent most but not all of them from attacking you. But, if you forget to spray or get into a bunch of them by accident, they will bore into your skin and itch so bad that you cannot sleep for two weeks. It is like having thousand of pin point size vampires drilling into your skin and sucking your blood.

Two weeks before season, I was at our local gun club dressed in shorts and got covered in them. One dose of Ivermectin killed the mites overnight and the only side effect was mild diarrhea for about 12hrs, which was likely because it killed and flushed out other intestinal parasites which you will get if you are around animals or drink untreated water at all. Yes, it is hard to think about dosing yourself with horse worming meds but it has many applications. The dose is by patient body weight. Some say you might benefit from a dose every month or two? I have not tried that.

OK ...so what exactly is a dude wipe?.... :E Shrug:
Nectar of the gods when you are stuck in the bush at lunch in the middle of a buffalo hunt.

They made that field s!@4 much happier and the rest of the day was happier.

Whatever brand they are worth taking in the field.

All cruisers should come with 2 ply toilet roll as standard...if it doesn't lodge a complaint :E Big Grin:

A final tip. An Ambien prescription is great for synchronizing time zones when you’re flying to the other side of the world. That said, it’s weird stuff and I’d never take it in transit.

Care to elaborate?

A beanie and a buff in Zim (Hwange area) in June this year, we had a frost one morning!

I'd based my clothing choices on June 2024 Zambezi Valley Zim but nightime temperatures were wildly different

A “JASE” kit
Augmentin, Doxycycline, Ciprodloxacin, Metronidazole, Azithromycin

A quick online questionnaire and a doctor reviews your answers and your antibiotics are mailed to your door.
Many doctors won’t prescribe prophylactic antibiotics just in case for trips anymore. View attachment 708534
Where do you get this online? Does it come with everything already or do create what you need?
