My recent Buffalo hunt ruined me. It plays and plays in my mind, obscuring my other hunts. Now, when I think of any other hunt I say to myself

“self” I say

“What now” head in hands, I reply, while sitting at the kitchen table

“ya know this money could be put towards another buffalo hunt”

“Shut up, me. You are not helping”

“Just sayin’…”

Dammit.

I know what you mean. I’m not even back a month and have already decided to book for a second swing at Buff. This time in Moz.

Good luck with yourself. That internal conversation I had with myself over going back after buff didn’t last long.

Its an addiction, I'm heading back in 2027 for my next fix.

First Buffalo hunts should come with a warning!

"Hunting Capebuffalo may cause a life long addiction"!
A hunter’s fentanyl. They know what they are doing, these PH pushers

lol!!! After ensuring retirement was covered I know the feeling of the opportunity costs of my “fun” funds!!! Thankfully I love my 2013 140,000 mile Landy and have zero passions except hunting Africa…What did Harry Shelby say…You will always hunt buffalo!!!!

Yep, that is why this website should be renamed - Buffalo Anonymous- BA

The recovery process is 12 steps….

Then you get closer…..

Then you shoot….

Now, you are an official addict….

Wait until you hunt a trophy elephant bull … it’s just as if not even more addicting.

Headed for my Fourth Buffalo hunt Wednesday….
Honestly surprised I haven’t done more really lol.
But as Mtn Infantry noted…Elephant (to me) is more so and I’ve done 4 Elephant hunts

I’ve done 3 Elephant Hunts and got back from my 5th Buffalo hunt (5th Buffalo) with Zambeze Delta Safaris a week and a half ago. That hunt was the toughest I’ve been on, as well as the most nerve wracking and very different from a traditional tracking hunt due to it being in the water but hard earned and well worth it. My hunt was also a little more extreme and difficult than most from the feedback I got from the PH.

I’ll 100% hunt more buffalo in the future, potentially another in the swamp because it was an awesome experience but I also look at the dollar aspect and think about how that money could be used to hunt more elephant, do a LDE hunt, or go somewhere I’ve never been like Tanzania or Uganda.

@Rare Breed wait until you hunt a real mature bull not just any elephant. To experience a 6-7 ton elephant bull at sub 20yds, and see another bull who’s a full meter and half taller than the one you’re trying to leap frog around is a different feeling. Get 3-5yds from one standing on the downward slope of a hill that he’s crested, while surrounded by other elephants is a very surreal feeling as well.

The only cure for buffalo hunting is buffalo hunting. I was hunting buffalo every year for a while. Thankfully, for the sake of my bank account, I’m not as mad at them as I once was.

Fentanyl!?! If you do the math, as addictions go, cocaine would be cheaper. Four cape buffalo and one water buffalo, but I think I have finally cleaned myself up.

I had pondered this same question you pose. The only conclusion I was able to arrive at is that upon taking my first Buffalo, I had somehow entered into a higher plane of existence. I am able to converse with my fellow buffalo brothers in a way that is often beyond the understanding of those who have not yet dropped the hammer on these magnificent beasts. The drug addiction analogy does have some parallels yet I feel called to a more noble purpose. Although the thought of having become a better husband, father and human as a result of my buffalo pursuit may seem foolish to some, I cannot deny the reality of it. I plan on returning to the dark continent in 2027 to rejuvenate myself, still trying to decide on the caliber.

I have more buffalo hunts booked, but I’m not addicted. They don’t far surpass other hunts to me. I’ll hunt whatever I think gives me the best experience from the area. I might not be addicted to hunting buffalo, but I’d be very upset to not hunt an area with buffalo, elephant, lion, leopard again. That’s the part that’s special to me.

Even with skull mounts, a man eventually runs out of room for more buffalo.
