Sunglasses, yes, no, type?

I wear glasses and have polarized lenses. However, I don't like to wear glasses when in the field. So I use contacts and wear a hat with a decent brim. I carry sunglasses to use when not hunting.

About 2 years ago I posted on this thread about my (then) new Costa polarized sunglasses. After further evaluation, these will only be used for fishing or around water. Anything that has a screen like a mobile phone or display on a truck, the polarization makes it unreadable. This is one of the reasons pilots don't use polarized sunglasses. A fact I found out after buying them.

I'm back to plastic frame Nike sunglasses with a dark grey tint for everything else. I have a matching set used as my range safety glasses with an amber coloring. Lightweight, effective and easily replaceable if they are lost or stolen.

100% of the time I’m bird hunting, I do my best any type of Hunting with shotguns to always wear them. To many horror stories of people taking bbs to the eyes can’t buy new eyes. I always feel movement gives you away not a glare from the lens

Hunting birds is the only time I wear sunglasses, invariably amber. I was hit in the the cheek years ago by a #8 pellet, fortunately fired from far enough away to not break the skin, but an inch higher probably would have penetrated my eye. As you said, can't buy new eyes. But sunglasses and scopes have never worked for me. As I always have a hat on, I've never felt the need for sunglasses; just tilt the head a little further if the sun's low.

For the first 76 years of my life I limited the use of sunglasses to driving in sunny days, specially in winter when the sun is lower.
However, in occasion of my second trip to Africa, I decided to use sunglasses on the bakkie. I found them precious as protection from dust and thorns.

i wear sunnys on the truck, protects eyes from wind and dust-especially irritating as i wear contact lenses
i use photocromic lenses, they adjust to brightness etc
most times when off truck and walking they go on top of my cap
always use sunnys when driving, oakley make great lenses both polarised and not

Polarized lenses can cause problems with some optical coatings and distort the image. It depends on the optic.

Any sunglasses can cause a poi shift if the lens has any distortion. Test it by holding it out at half arms length and looking at a telephone pole. Move your head around and see if the pole bends…

For fishing- always! Learned the hard way with burned retinas.

For hunting, especially if riding in back of cruiser, yes… for protection- not only for sun but also bugs and junk. Have started wearing lightly shaded UV/blue blocker types more and more while out and about.

If I'm fishing I'm most likely sight casting. For this I use Smith (formerly Action Optics) with a copper (amber) colored lens. Hands down the best to see fish in the shallows- fresh or salt.

I usually don't wear sunglasses when hunting as I count on my hat to provide the needed shade. But on those occasions when I do they will be ballistic sunglasses. Oakley makes excellent ones but my current interest is E-Tint. The technology is remarkable. And they change instantly.

I’ve worn eyeglasses since I was in grade school. So switching to sunglasses when driving or being outside just seems second nature. I’ve tried amber lenses and they seem to brighten things up a bit, but aren't as good at cutting glare, even if they are polarized. I’ve also tried photo-grey or Transitions lenses that automatically darken or lighten to suit the conditions. I just don’t like how slowly they change, especially when coming into a dimly lit room from the bright outside. After a while, mine also took on a slightly grey tint when indoors. Anyway, just my experience.

I am pretty glare intolerant, I find it uncomfortable to be out in bright light to the point of not being able to open my eyes. So for decades I have worn sunglasses, and tried all sorts. My ultimate are Serengeti driver type, for clarity and even dull light definition enhancement. So for me sunglasses are more or less a must on a hunt. What do you find?

I have prescription eye glasses that do everything, sunglasses, close up and far away work awesome!!! Just very expensive

Dark glasses are a must:

(1) Persol 649 - the sine qua non are the 714 folding model, and the best of those is the 'Steve McQueen' model with blue lenses. These are better because the arms fold inwards so the hinges do not scratch the lenses.

(2) Vuarnet Legend 02 foldable. French. '60s design. Funky.

Been wearing Maui Jims and Oakleys for years, best glasses IMHO. Prescription types in my more recent years. Having lens replacement surgery next week and should be back to regular sun glasses after that. Won’t miss the pain in the backside of having to carry multiple pairs of glasses around all the time. My flight surgeon handed me a good pair of sun glasses when I was in the service and told me never to go out into the sun without them...did as instructed and have to say it’s probably why I didn’t need prescription glasses until I was into my forties.

Mine are Oakleys perscription that change with the sun and are perfect
