We have seen oil at over $140/barrel before. We've never seen diesel hit $6. Oil is currently trading right around $100/barrel. In 2022 it was over $114, gas went over $4, but diesel (in normal states, not CA) peaked at $5.81.

Regarding diesel prices, its about demand & supply.. There is simply too little diesel available in the global market. In Europe there has been a shortage since the sanctions against Russia came..Europe imported a huge amount from Russia. There is enough crude in the market but too little capacity in refineries.. The Iran war has worsened the situation...and if the trouble with Iran is not solved the market fear that diesel prices will continue to soar into the winter..

A large scale AI type data center can use up to 1.8 billion gallons per year.

Both California and Arizona need to get serious about water conservation.
Much of our water comes from the same source, and Lake Powell is getting extremely low. More so in drought years.

a question because i am not well versed in data centers. does the water that is used, ( i assume for cooling the data center) disappear? is it contaminated? is it in some way unusable after cooling a data center? or, does it go into a cooling pond and then drain off to be used again?

New ones recycle the water. In a closed loop. I wish my local rural community would court one. We could use the billions pumped into our little communities. And gain huge property tax relief.

They are coming either way. We have Solar and wind projects everywhere near me. That full disclosure I am profiting from.

I’ve seen data centers. They just look like a big monolithic rectangle rock formations. Not as obtrusive as wind and solar. And with wind and solar the whole community does not profit as with Data centers.

I believe it’s foreign bots sewing mistrust and disinformation.

@1dirthawker you are asking the right questions. Several new data centers have been approved near me and people are very concerned about water consumption. Most of the data centers will have an open loop cooling system, which means the water utility provider supplies water to the data center and then the water goes down the drain. The utility provider, such as the city or parish (county) makes a lot of money. Most people want the data centers to use a closed loop system, where water is re-used.

Chip makers are actually looking at next generation chips that are cooled differently and use considerably less water.

I've heard it's for cooling systems for the giant rooms of super computers, servers, and data storage.
I would think they would have some high tech chiller systems, or something similar to an AC condensing/compressor units?

That is the point I was trying to make, although not well. The refining disruptions have been outside NA which hits the distillate market much harder than the mogas market. Diesel is a global commodity, hence the run up in price. The government will only make it worse if they try to shelter us from it. Just ask Jimmy Carter how well that works.

Older data centers use evaporative cooling on the rooftops with exposed water troughs. This is where the anti-AI anti-Datacenter factions get their facts wrong by extrapolating new mega-datacenter footprints against antiquated existing data center practices of deprecated DCs.

Closed-loop evaporative cooling technology is now quite common for data centers just as it is for your home's HVAC.
