Turkey has historically always been a flaky ally ... for anyone and everyone: Germany, Russia, Armenia, Kurds, Russians, etc., etc. Comparing Denmark to Turkey is just silly.

Not comparing it to Turkey, but NATO in general, look at England, France, Denmark, and England have all responded to the dire threat in Greenland with a total of company strength of a handful of men and equipment.

"A Night of Camp David" is a rather remarkable novel written by Fletcher Knebel in 1965. He was also the co-author of "Seven Days in May." Both are still in publication and Camp David was on the NY Times Best Seller List for 18 weeks.

Without giving away the plot completely, it is the story of a young ambitious senator from Iowa who is summoned to Camp David to meet with his charismatic populist president who wants him to replace the current vice president, mired in scandal, as his running mate for his second term. The conversation gradually slips into a world where the president rants about his enemies and other issues. He erratically expresses his desire to develop a closer relationship between the United States and the USSR, and wants to cut ties with US allies in Europe. The president is convinced the news media and much of the party leadership are conspiring against him. The senator gradually concludes the president is mentally ill and dangerously paranoid.

To remind, this book was written in 1965. It is an excellent read that obviously has held up rather well.

Seven Republican senators voted to impeach Trump. Pretty sure Trump has successfully primaried four of them or gotten them to retire by saying he would primary them. Cassidy makes the fifth.

If Democrats win the midterms Trump will be impeached again. Call it self preservation. Call it revenge. Democrats have always maintained a cohesive voting block. Republicans not so much. Trump is looking for loyalty.

Of course, the maps also show where Greenland sits in relation to US approaches, and if you know anything at all about China's claim to be a "near Arctic power", the strategic implications should be obvious. I can also see China right there on Map 6, it doesn't even have to be labeled.

But that would require critical thinking skills.

Yes I can see China on that map ... a tiny bit of it. The missile launch sites shown are not in China. All are in Russia and labeled as such. The map targets for all Russian missiles is Washinton D.C. on the east coast of US which assumes D.C. would be the sole target. Of course it would not. Other targets to take out military sites would be scattered across the US. Those trajectories would not go over Greenland. The three left most trajectories illustrated on that map originate in eastern Siberia near China. They don't cross Greenland airspace even with D.C. as target. So I'm the one who can't read a map? Pffft.

Of course you were comparing Denmark/Greenland to Turkey. It is silly to think Denmark would be as duplicitous an ally as Turkey.

Gimme a break. This thing has gotten ridiculous. The U.S is not going to invade Greenland. An act of war would require congressional approval, and thats not going to happen, nor should it.

Invasion of Panama did not require Congressional approval. Neither did the invasion of Venezuela. The president can conduct "police actions" on his own initiative.

We are not asking them to defend Greenland though. And due to Ukraine, Europe has been stepping up on defense especially since Trump has been waffling on Article 5 of NATO depending on his mood.

I think we are talking past each other a little bit and I might have missed something so I apologize in advance.

I believe the strategic intent, is to be able to have the golden dome technology to minimize a potential blindside for the US. There is a lot of additional noise or reasons but I think that is truly the strategic intent and goes beyond just having a base or multiple bases.

I don't think it has to do with defending a territory or protect an alliance. I think it goes back before Ukraine when Germany laughed at Trump when he said stop buying natural gas from Russia. I dont think Trump wants to have to ask the same group for permission to do anything and I think there might be some trust issues there on both sides.

Hopefully that adds a little more context, on some analysis I have heard.

It sounds rather silly on a first view, but if the US would ever invade Greenland and Nato allies would be honoring article 5, then that would mean that they would indeed have to fight against the US.

But like you say hopefully it is nothing more then some sort of weird negotiation tactics from Trump.

I think thats because they dont really see any real treat and that the deployment are actually more of them responding to Trumps comment about the Island being undefended and that they were hoping that he would take their deployment as a win similar to him getting Nato allies pay up and that it would make him calm down.

Obviously it backfired, but I do believe the intent was to make him happy and then for him to proceed to boost about how he managed to get Europe to pay up for defending Greenland.
