Could not pass up the Ruger 1 in 9.3x74 on GB. I didn’t really want it, but at the price it was going for, I felt like I had to. So it is headed my way.

Found some cheap burner ammo from Prvi, and gonna see how this thing works out. I needed it like a hole in my head... just puts me further away from getting my R8 and 404 Jeff project...

I tried to be mature and save money, but you guys are a bad influence.

One of the sales reps at Lipseys said he THINKS he heard Ruger is doing the Hawkeye African in 9.3x62. If that is the case I will be putting my Sauer 100 in 9.3 up for sale to fund that since I couldn’t resist on this one.

I have a bunch of cool MGs, but for whatever reason I am enjoying shooting and buying the big caliber rifles more. ‍♂️

Should be fun. Let us know how it shoots.

In a Ruger No. 1, you should be able to load it up to it's full potential. I have both a 9.3x74R and a 9.3x66 Sako and they have similar case capacities, 84 gr vs 82 gr water. You could use the Sako data if you want more out of her than the standard loads offer. This will clearly put you in .375 Mag territory.

But to be honest, I find myself doing it the other way around and loading the Sako down to 9.3x74R levels for 90% of my shooting. Why mess with perfection.

Could be considerable interest from members of this forum if this is true.

Let me know if/when you get rid of your Sauer. I'm looking for that very rifle for my oldest son in the not horribly distant future.

Congrats on the addition!

You can never go wrong with a #1. As far as a 9.3x74R... GREAT!!! I’ve been wanting to get a TC Encore barrel chambered for this old reliable cartridge. Just never pulled the trigger (pun intended).
As far as saving for a R8, it’s only money... a renewable resource.

As my wife so kindly points to the door as I head off to work...

Congrats on the new Ruger 9.3

having fired a no 1 in 404, i have decided that the 9.3x74 factory loaded level is max cartridge in that rifle for me.
bruce.

I owned one in .416 Rigby up until about 18 mos ago. Definitely a big gun in a little package!

Hey Glenn, welcome aboard and congratulations on the new No. 1. There are several of us that appreciate the Ruger’s around here. I see you are In Baytown, I’m just east of there. Maybe one weekend you can bring that 9.3 along and a few of us can burn a little powder.
Cheers,
Cody

i remember watching a documentary on richard burton.
a scene in it showed a massive safari of porters and explorers passing through high grass, and a lion attacked.
someone brought up a big farquarson and shot the lion, saving the day.
ever since then, british single shot falling blocks have had a fascination, both as game rifles and long range target rifles, in black powder form.
the ruger no1 has similar lines, and is the nearest i will ever come.
i often wonder how a 450/400 ruger would respond to the old express load of a 300 gn bullet and over 100 gns of black powder.
the old 3 1/4 inch case had a longer neck, and could fit a bigger lube wad under the bullet, aiding in shooting repeat shots without wiping.
a ruger loaded this way in 450/400 might not be as bad to shoot as the smokeless load.
bruce.

Renewable resource? Would you kindly explain that to my wife when it comes to hunting..

I have a 450/400 in a no. 1 and it is a semi pleasant rifle to shoot with Hornady factory ammo. @tarbe has a couple loads that are a bit snappy brewed up for his.

Your worst fear is that one of them gives you a "White Elephant". Think of the term as applied to ancient Siam.

Oh but how a white elephant can give you hours of frustration while you try to lead it down the path of righteousness and make it fit your needs.

What sling studs do those swivels fit ? They look to be quite a bit wider than the standard modern swivels. They may be just what I need for my Remington 30 Express wide swivel studs. Can you measure the pin diameter ?
