I’m looking, and planning at this point. I’m interested in where to go for plains game like:
Red Hartebeest, Orxy, Impala, Blesbok, Springbuck, Bushbuck or Nyala.

Are SA or Namibia equally good for my list? Or most of it? My ‘06 with 180gr should work.

I'd look at the East Cape of RSA and especially the Karoo in the EC and especiallythe Karoo for Oryx and Springbok. Drop the Nyala unless you get to Natal in RSA or Zimbabwe or Mozambique. Add black wildebeest in the EC.

Or go to Namibia (i haven't been) and add Mountain Zebra and if at all possible, dik dik.

I would honestly drop the Nyala and put in kudu instead. It will be a better hunt;)

Also in RSA add common duiker and Steenbok if you come across one. Low cost fun little critters;) And go out for a night hunt. Take a predator call, even a mouse squeak. Jackals, porcupine, genet, all low cost super cool critters. Even a spring hare.

I’d research the game native to each region. I think eastern cape south Africa or central Namibia makes the best first safari.

If you decide Namibia, I’d plan your hunt around eland, kudu, gemsbok, hartebeest, springbok, warthog, Hartmann zebra. I like Namibia because it feels very authentic. The country has a small population and the average farm size is very large. Most outfitters will have a high fence primary farm then a lot of surrounding low fence cattle farms to hunt. Pricing is generally higher than South Africa though.
If you decide eastern cape South Africa I’d plan your hunt around kudu, bushbuck, impala, blesbok, springbok, black wildebeest, Burchell zebra. I like Eastern cape because the variety of landscapes. It’s a lot less commercialized than regions like Limpopo, but keep in mind most hunting farms will be fenced but large. The prices are really fair, but the kudu genetics doesn’t match greater kudu further north. If the hunting experience is what you’re primarily after I think eastern cape is best value and a very good experience.
If you decide Limpopo or other regions within driving distance of Johannesburg, I’d base hunt around kudu, impala, warthog, blue wildebeest, zebra. I’d be more careful with this option though. The benefit is less total travel time to reach, but the area is the most developed and game farming is very commercialized. Nearly all farms will be high fenced and many on the smaller side. Not every farm feels authentic/wild. I’d ask a lot of questions to outfitters about the size of properties they hunt, if they have exclusive access, driving time each day to reach different farms, how many hunters they take per year and at the same time. It’s easier to reach, but I find it a lot easier to select an outfitter in eastern cape or Namibia.
I haven’t hunted Kalahari regions or northern cape in South Africa to compare. I’d expect the hunting something of a cross between Namibia and other regions of South Africa.

A lot of outfits hunt the Limpopo and free state. This lets you experience 2 areas.

Limpopo will get you what you want. Many outfitters offer special packages for first time hunters to Africa. Contact the outfitters who responded to your question and discuss package prices.

South Africa is mostly fenced hunting areas.
In Namibia, there is combination of unfenced and fenced areas.
If fencing matters to you.

Oryx will have cheaper trophy fees in Namibia.

Nyala is introduced species in Namibia, and available only in fence. Even in fence, it does not flourish everywhere in Namibia.

Bushbuck you can hunt only in South Africa of those two countries.
(If I am not mistaken, or if somebody haven't introduced bushbuck in Namibia, but I have not seen that in any of the offers that I remember)

30-06 is good to go for all animals listed. Expect shots up to 200 meters. Have premium bullet of at least 180 grains.
Of all the animals listed, I havent hunted only Nyala... but I hope to change that soon.

Consider kudu and hartmann zebra if you will go to Namibia.

I'll give you two good options based on what you are thinking about doing.
1. The top of your list screams Namibia. So many good outfitters to choose from, prices are good, but do your home work.
2. Bushbuck and Nyala are at the bottom of your list. You won't find these often in the majority of Namibia. If they creep up to the top of your list then I'd say Eastern Cape of South Africa.
3. Some will scream at me for this but that's ok: Be cautious with Limpopo province. Many small properties there that will not provide the first safari experience you are lookin for.

Hello JoeA
All the species you mentioned we have on our properties except the bushbuck.
We have the advantage of very large properties in the Kalahari desert (similar to Namibia) while still in South Africa which makes travelling to us easier than Namibia.
We pick up all our clients in Johannesburg airport which have many different flights arriving there every day from multiple destinations.
We also have monster kudu in our area with 60 inch plus kudu taken every year.
Some of our ranches border on Botswana and in Botswana is no hunting pressure so that allows the kudu to grow very old.

We hunt on property that we own so you are dealing directly with the land owner and not a middle man.

I would agree with ActionBob to rather drop the nyala and rather do a kudu in it's place.
We do have nyala on our properties but the kudu genetics is just so much better.
You can always do a nyala later on another safari in Kwa-Zulu Natal or eastern Cape provinces where there are a lot of them and they have good genetics there also.

The 30-06 is probably my favourite plainsgame rifle.
I have a 30-06 Dakota rifle with a black composite stock (and black metal parts) and my trackers have nicknamed it "The Black Mamba" because it is so deadly. I tried to keep track of my 30-06 kills (clients rent it from me a lot) and a conservative estimate is somewhere between 2 600 and 2 650 animals up till the end of 2025.
I use it with Barnes 180 grain Tripple Shock bullets and it will shoot 5 shots in a dime at 100 meters.
I also have a silencer on it which helps lady clients a lot by reducing the recoil and the noise.

Expect shooting distances with us around 100 to 250 meters on 95 % of your shots so the 30-06 is the perfect choice. You do not need the super duper ultra fast calibers that is so fast that cheaper bullets will disintegrate only 4 inches under the skin without penetrating deeper. Also most people develop a flinch (because of the heavy recoil and very loud noise) if you constantly shoot these ultra fast calibers which make for more bad shot placement and result in more wounded animals.
Stick with what works.
The 30-06 have been around a long time.
In Africa we prefer a heavy slow bullet for good penetration.
Our animals are much tougher than the deer in America.

That is my 5 cents worth of information.
Have fun researching for your safari.
The journey is part of the fun to get to your destination.
Do not make hasty decisions. Do a lot of research and ask many questions and call references.
Who ever you choose (there are many good outfitters on this group) may you have a good safari experience.

Sincerely
Hans de Klerk

Great advice already given. I’ve been to RSA 3 times, enjoyed it. With that said, my next hunt (if I go to Africa) will be Namibia. I’d like to do a mountain hunt for kudu and mountain zebra.

$7,000 for plains game is doable. However, take into account the airfare and dip and pack. Dip and pack is ridiculous and I would donate my animals if I ever went again….

Just remember if you don’t export animals you have to pay VAT on the trophy fee. Still cheaper than dip and pack and export though.
