Hi folks, I am getting ready for my first Cape Buffalo hunt in Zimbabwe. The rifle I will be using is a weatherby Mark V with a Trijicon 3 X 9 scope, chambered in 375 H&H. I shoot this rifle well but am having trouble finding bullets in these days of shortages. I have Federal factory ammunition, loaded with 300 grain round nose soft points. Will this bullet suffice for buffalo? I know everyone likes the Barnes but this rifle does not shoot them as well as the Federal? Your thoughts please.

Swift A-Frame, Trophy Bonded Bear Claw, Woodleigh RNSP... Those are your sweet spot for Cape Buff. Can use Hornady Dangerous Game Expanding (Bonded), stay away from the older stuff that is just expanding. A lot of issues with reliable expansion and proper penetration from the original DGX. "IF" you can find it... Winchester Fail Safe shoots really well in my 375H&H, and I'd trust it on a Cape Buff. Sometimes it can be found on GunBroker but you'll pay a lot more then any of the other top choices.

Replying to a similar post a few days back regarding Federal "Blue Box" PowerShok 300gn soft points, (if that's what you have) I mentioned that I used them on some Aussie big game (water buff & scrub bull) and whilst they worked I would suggest getting something more suitable as mentioned above by others. As they say, the ammo is the cheapest part of a safari, find a premium product that suits the rifle and take that with confidence.

Yes, it is the power shock blue box. I am having a heck of a time finding Nosler partition, Swift A Frame of Barnes Tsx. I would settle for bullets or ammo.

If you have a good supply of tsx, have you tried cleaning your barrel? Removing all the copper and retry. Monos are sometimes funny about that.

If you have the ability to reload, sounds like you have some once fired brass. You can order some swifts directly from them. Several custom loaders out there. You might be able to address too.

Good luck with your hunt.

Like @425SCHADE i have shot OZ buff with federal blue box softs, I would have felt much better using that cheap ammo if there would have been a bayonet on the end of the 375. It works but the bullet sucks. I wouldn’t hunt Cape Buff with them and I bet most African PH’s would be a hard no on it as well.

Do not use this bullet for a Cape buffalo. It’s not bonded and really soft. I have extra federal trophy bonded bear claws I bought here from another member. I can sell you at $100/box shipped if interested, up to 3 boxes.

Are these bear claws a good bullet for buffalo? I have never shot them, but yes, I am interested. Thank you

I am a handloader but at this point will shoot factory.

Reloading International has some 300gr Swift A-Frame in stock. This is a great bullet for Cape Buffalo. Two boxes and a bit of help from folks here on AH, including myself if you so wish, a bit of work from you and I'm sure you'll have a load in short order.

For Factory ammo, find a brand that loads Swift A-Frame. ( I think Federal does.) Brian

Thanks for the help. I just ordered 2 boxes of Swift A Frames from Reloading International. When they arrive I will contact you again for some powder choices.

I don't know what rifle you have, but my M70 loves IMR4350 behind that bullet.

I prefer swifts just cause I have experience with them, but I think trophy bonded bear claws would be a close second. I’m hunting with charlton mccallum safaris next week they list Swift and trophy bonded bear claws as their preferred bullets on their website. Here’s my bullet test from some wet dirt with bear claws.

I have a Weatherby Mark V rifle. IMR 4350 is what I was going to try with the Swift 300's, and since it is a weatherby, will probably be closer to max. Most Weatherby I have shot prefer loads up near the top end.

CM,
That is nice work! I would like that cartridge slide for 50-110 Win. I would also use it for 500 S&W. Six cartridge loops would be perfect for me.

I will send you payment immediately.

Thank you,
