What's the riskiest stunt you've ever pulled?

One time a buddy made a bet on how fast we could get into town. I was in high school and susceptible to such wagers so I stood on the accelerator of my 2000 F350 with a tuned 7.3.
I let it level off at about 100 or so right in time for a deer to jump the guard rail directly in my path. I looked down just after impact and was doing 98 MPH.
Fortunately the brush guard took most of the damage and I only had to buy a radiator and transmission cooler. The weak spot on the brush guard was replaced with a reinforced piece of 1/4 flat metal.
I didn’t figure that $400 was too bad considering the potential we had for destruction that night.

Can you imagine what a big feral hog would have done?....

I have done a lot of stuff that does speak well of my decision making abilities. But one that I look back on and wonder how it didn't maim us...

In my youth - say before the age of 10 - me and my buddies wanted to be mountain men, and had the requisite coon skin caps and Kentucky rifle cap guns - real wood and real metal. Perhaps some of you will remember those rifles: two small relief holes on the barrel near the hammer. You put a cork "ball" in the barrel and the hammer struck a red paper cap, which caused the ball to come out. Well, that wasn't good enough for us.

We taped the holes with electrical tape, opened up my dad's shotgun shells to get powder, and topped the powder off with marbles. I don't think we had all that much for velocity, but it caused the marbles to come out and hit the side of the garage.

I kid you not. How those didn't blow up on us I will never know. It was short-lived. We were afraid my dad would notice the shells missing, so it was a one day experiment. Looking back I realize it has something of a Patrick McManus-esque quality to it, but I am not fibbing: true story.

Please someone else tell me they also tried that too. We couldn't have been alone.

Close, we made a cannon by welding some 1 1/4 pipe and some scrap together. (Imagine 10 year olds of today in dad's shop welding up a project?)

My buddies dad had a huge metal keg of surplus 4831 from WWII. Estimating the charge was a quick 3 way discussion with the outcome based on our combined knowledge of ballistics. That would be exactly none.
Two handfuls seemed about right. Don't mind the spillage.
We called the mangled looking thing a Hotchkiss.
We loaded her up. Taped up a walnut for a projectile. Made some kind of fuse and got behind a pile of dirt. The first time firing it was unimpressive. Reload! More powder, and a tighter projectile. The concussion, noise and smell were memorable. A few weeks later we found the remnants of the Hotchkiss. The welds held!

Maybe hunting a hippo at night ?

Also climbing rock faces, but then I was young and didn´t know better :ROFLMAO: :ROFLMAO:

I didn't even think about SCUBA diving...

If my wife would have known that I had cave dived in springs in Florida (at night, not that it matters) looking for fossils, she may have opted for a guy with less aversion to suicide due to stupidity.

It will be 35 years for us in October.

I think she may be opted for a more "risk-adverse" guy in hindsight.

*** No, actually, I don't think she would.

I think, that she thinks, that I'm interesting.

She's pretty interesting herself. Retired biology teacher.
She will grab (non-venomous) snakes, without pause. (I will, at least, pause)
She has done some pretty cool stuff, not risky, but cool.

Knows how to use a rifle and pistol.

Wading back to main land from Bolt Island, Chirundu through the Zambezi river.....our boat had been late picking us up, we could see the parrafin fridge with the cold beer from the island it was hot and we were thirsty.....
We did a lot of stupid things on that trip.....young and care free......

@steve white
I do risky shit everyday.
I wake up in the morning and wonder what shit I'm going to get into today.
My mate and I were going big game hunting until we realised that could be detrimental to our health. We were going to go hunting on my wife's and my anniversary until she asked if I knew what day it was. You have to be big game to go hunting on your anniversary.
The speeds I used to drive trucks at (90mph++) on the crap single lane interstate. Hiways we had looking back was pretty stupid.

Strangely, this thread started with a spicy Italian meal resulting in a dream....I had decided to sear a sleeping lion on the rump with a red hot cattle brand and then seek shelter in my Landrover (which I don't have...) Of course the door wouldn't open. It was all Technicolor real when my wife poked me for running in place under the covers. OK, I would never do that in waking hours!!

But it made me think of all the stupid, risky Bubba moments I have engaged in...high speed conveyances of two wheel and four wheel persuasion, etc. (I think I will list mine last.)

What is the zaniest stunt you've pulled in Africa or back with local home field advantage?

Hunted a lion without telling the wife until it was over and in the sand…pretty tame in comparison to some of these!

My wife doesn't have a clue about the rifles I buy, and don't have a clue about the purses/shoes that she buys.

When we got married, our base salaries went into a "mutual" account, that paid all of our "mutual expenses." ( mortgage on our home, taxes, gas bill, electric bill, insurance, etc.). Now, our pensions go into it.

If we can make anything beyond that, we can keep it as our own.

My wife has done great as an "afterschool teacher"

I have done pretty good as an NRA Instructor in rifle, pistol and shotgun.

Met a random girl in a bar and things went way better than I thought they would. I was unprepared and didn’t want to mess the sheets, so the deposit was made. It was a long 9 months before I gathered the courage to see if there was anything new in her life.

Absolute huge, mega, monstrous "nope" from me on that one. In Dr. Seuss fashion:

Not in day
Not in night
Not in the biggest
Not in the smallest
Not with a buddy
Not alone

Not in a million years, another life, etc.

I had a buddy who wanted me to get into it. The answer every time was absolutely not. He even pulled the "Well, you're the only buddy I have. Who will go with me?" My response was "Time to meet some new people."

One thing about diving for me was at the very end, I wanted to see blue sky and sun. Even if it was just for a couple more breaths. Pop that wing, take one last ride, and say goodbye with the birds.

I was not dying back against a cave ceiling.

We did a lot of dumb stuff going into wrecks, diving at the edge of our mix, pushing BT, etc. Cave diving to me was just that whole other level.

After a morning deer hunt, was walking back to the truck past a bull in a barnyard that had a fence consisting of only a few thin strands of wire. Whatever possessed me to make a few grunts on the call, I'll never know, but he charged from about fifty yards away. Thankfully he gave up the chase as I hightailed it out of there. I was reminded of the famous Forrest Gump line "Are you crazy or just plain stupid"? Along the same lines, it seems I always needed to fish sections of creeks that went through pastures with bulls in them. You never know how fast you can run until you do it with hip boots or chest waders while wielding an eight foot fly rod.

I have done some dumb stuff involving bulls and whippy sticks, they do stop after the second fence though

Come to think of it...I demolished the unexploded grenade from a bouncing mine.. Its like a splinter hand grenade. First attempt was with with 250 gram TNT stick...it did not explode.. Bugger.

Second attempt..veery carefully placed a 500 gram TNT block right beside it.. BOOM..it went off.

Repeling down out of a helicopter with an M60 machine gun strapped on hanging between my legs hoping I could keep it out from between my legs when I landed.
That reminds me of running off a cliff and rapelling face forward just for kicks.

Dave, I could use both of them if still available. I just picked up a new .22 mag and a .22 pump that they would be perfect on.

Dan who is C. W. Richter? He seems to not be a fan of myself!
