What are your go to boots for hunting in the mountains. Steep, wet, loose rocks, grass, slippery terrain, sometimes snow or snow.

What boots do you use in the mountains to hunt sheep, Ibex, goats, tahr, chamois?

I used Zamberlan 700 Sierra GTX Boots in New Zealand for Tahr and Chamios, but I’ll need a stiffer shanked boot. Zamberlan has a stiffer boot in a Mountain Trek GTX RR that I’ve looked at. I was also considering Crispi - Alpine Pro SF.

I tried Kenetrek. Comfortable but I was undecided on the height.

I had the chance to see the Crispi Alpine Pro SF very nice boots
• light ( you need that in the mountains and long distance)
• the sole is considering grade 2 regarding the flexibility
I’m not sure if they are proper boots for hard mountains or snow. For rocks you need a more rigid sole and for cold weather more insulation on the boots.
My opinion are good for summer in the mountains, with light equipment, light back pack, etc.

Always Crispi the last several years, and almost always one of their SF versions. Used lighter weight versions for John Muir through hike few years back and backpacking around Mont Blanc.

When I went to Adak in December I packed some Crocs for the lodge and some basic Academy Magellan brand duck boots for the hiking and had no regrets on that. They did excellent.

Schnee Beartooth V3. The most comfortable mountain boot I’ve ever worn. I wore then in the Southern Alps in New Zealand and the performed exceptionally. They’ve also served me well in Idaho and Montana.

My wife prefers Crispi.. her Skarven 2 GTX have served her exceptionally well and have been to the same places my Schnee have traveled…

I've been wearing the Kenetrek Mountain Extreme Uninsulated for a several years now. Super supportive and rugged. Absolutely waterproof when you keep them maintained and waxed. Only downside is they are H.E.A.V.Y.

Crispi. Due to my line of work in spend a lot of time in the mountains in rough terrain. Been through lots of boots. Crispi has landed on top. Zamberlans were good. Scarpa didn’t work for me. Lowas were comfy but didn’t hold up. Danners were comfy but got shredded quickly.

Right now I have three pairs of Crispi boots. The Lapponia 2s, Thor 2s and the Guides. For a serious mountain hunt I’d probably be rocking the Thor 2s or maybe the guides if it was going to be snowy.

There so many great boots today it's hard to say what is best. I will say the Kenetrek Mountain Extreme is very hard to beat for a do it all mountain boot. The only reason I'd continue to shop is for a lighter weight (I'm always looking for lighter everything!) but still tough true mountain boot. I know some of the Crispi's like you mention might fit the bill.
This is one advantage to going to the big hunting shows like SCI in Nashville or the Wild Sheep Show in Reno. There you can shop till you drop for boots!

Everyone’s foot is different so a custom orthotic insole is important IMO. I use Crispi Lapponia 2 with Sheepfeet custom insole. For more rugged steeper terrain, I’d opt for Crispi summits.

I really like Kennetrek but they are heavy. Other good options are Crispi and Scarpa in their various models. The key is good insoles and socks.

Kenetrek Hardscrabble and Desert Guides. The latter in the brutally abrasive volcanic stuff in the SW.

Great point, I have custom made orthotic insoles from a podiatrist. I Had a plantar plate tear 13 years ago. Now that toe is pinned.

I’ve been wearing orthotics for over 25 years, they just keep evolving with wedges and groves. So, the boot needs to accommodate them because I already have a wide foot.

Last Doc visit he told me the Current Zamberlan’s have too much flex for alpine hunting and I’m at risk of another tear on my opposite foot. That would suck in the mountains because your toe dislocates! I dealt with that for a couple months last go round. Popping it back into place and taping it. I finally got a small Velcro strap and secured daily it until I had the surgery… Not fun!

Appreciate everyone’s input.

Danner Full Curls. I have only 'mountain' hunted once - Kodiak, '23, goat. They were good to my feet. I drew for Kodiak this year so they will get another chance.

I’ve got an old pair of non-insulated Limmer boots I’m looking to retire or relegate to warmer and mid-temp climate hunts. My Colorado Mule Deer guide highly recommends Crispi boots. I had a chance to look at them at SCI Nashville last month, but not try on a pair due to the constant line at their booth. I was impressed by how lightweight they were. However, I did notice the midsole seemed quite narrow. Can anyone speak to Crispi boots narrowness and how that may affect arch support?

I used to wear Meindl exclusively for 25 years. All others copied them for years. I have now switched to Crispi and love them. Kennetrek didn’t stand behind their boots when one of my guides had a leaky boot. He switched to Crispi.

La Sportiva Nepal if the terrain is really gnarly or cold, La Sportiva Trango Cube if it isn't.

There are a million good boots in that category, try on all you can.

I will be looking for a set of these when my .505 is done... sadly not cashed up right now for these. :(
Need anything in trade?
Cheers,

what kind of velocity does the 140 grains list, curious how they would fit in with my current 130 gr, supply of 270s. maybe a pic of the box data listing vel. and drop. Oh and complements on that ammo belt, nice.
