I have been one the site for a while, but I have never posted. I am in the beginning stages of planning a hunting trip to South Africa and have a couple of questions.

How far in advance should I contact an outfitter to work out a package?

From looking online several outfitters have drawn my attention, one of which is 3 S Safaris. Has anyone hunted with them and if so could you please give me a little feedback on your experience with them.

I ve hunted Africa 3 times and in the planning stages for hunts 4-5. Book at least one year in advance if you can or at least 8 months out as most prime dates will be taken by then. My last safari was with KMG one of our sponsors here, I suggest you contact him with your wish list and let him put together a package for you. Excellent operation. Many outfits can offer you great packages to suit your needs that may not be advertised.

Welcome aboard and best of luck in planning your hunt!

Glad you have joined! My own experience is as short as 12 days, as long as 9 months. A lot depends on how flexible you are with work days off, and of course airline tickets and the biggest, funds! The planning and anticipation is a large part of the fun, I second checking out the sponsors on this site, but as always, CHECK CURRENT REFERENCES. Just because someone else likes a particular outfitter does not mean it fits your needs and style. Good luck and let us know how it goes!

Welcome to AH lanethms!

Welcome to AH.
One tip I have for you: use a travel agent that specializes in hunters traveling with firearms. I used Travel with Guns on both my safaris. Gracy Travel is another well known one and there are several others. They can help you with your gun permits as well as arrange your travel.

Welcome to the forum, @lanethms ,
Please feel free to drop me a personal mail right here on the forum, or an email at info@huntsafaris.co.za, and I will be happy to present you with an offer.
Alternatively, you can also read some of the reports from some of our AH members here, who has hunted with us. You can find this here:

I am aware that my webpage us currently down. This is due to being attacked by spam recently, with my webmaster currently being in Kodiak Island.
Hope to hear from you sir.

Take Care,

Welcome to AH and have fun planning and prepping for your first trip. You'll be planning the next on your home.
My first trip was booked 8 months out. Right now I have been waiting 14 months for my 2019 trip and 23 months for my 2020 trip. That is too long to anticipate, its driving me crazy waiting. If you can get the dates you want, make it less than a year. That way the anticipation and prepping isn't watered down by the feeling that its never going to get here- at least for me.

Enjoy the journey, good luck

I just recently hunted with 3S Safaris in August. This was my first time ever hunting in South Africa and I can say without a doubt that I was 100% satisfied with them. Feel free to message me any questions you may have and I will gladly answer them.

1 year on your first time. Plan in detail, then go over those details several times as the year progresses. Depending on where you live and the airline and route you take will determine if it is wise to use a travel agent. If you have done a lot of international travel regardless of the reason, then it's not too big a deal. If you have only crossed the Mississippi River a couple of times in your life, you might want to use a travel agent. Many members of this forum can answer any question you have. Good Luck!

Welcome to the posting side.

Welcome lanethms! The further ahead you can book, the greater the chance of getting the time slot you want to hunt. That said, there are always some great end of season (Sept-Nov) hunts that show up on here. The flights cost less as well in the off seasons. But you have to have a flexible schedule to be ready to book and go. Check out the DEALS & OFFERS section to see what I mean.
Best of luck!

Welcome. I planned my first trip this year 6 months in advance. Booked my 2019 trip when I got back in June 11 months in advance. Earlier you book the chances are better on available dates. I had a wonderful time at Bos En Dal Safaris. Give them a shout for a package quote. Definitely used a travel agent and some one firearms import.
Jennifer at Travel Express and Henry at Riflepermits took great care of everything for me

Welcome to AH. Nine months to a year works!

Lots of good answers already to your question. The one rule of thumb is the sooner you book, the more likely you get the dates you need/want. Show season is right around the corner and certainly outfitters will still be booking for 2019. But they will likely be coming with lots of dates already filled and booking for 2020.

Thank you all for all the information. I still have a lot of time, looking at either end of March or middle of June but not until 2021. My wife and I do travel a bit and already have a trip in March and the following March is planned as well. It will be both my wife (she will not be hunting) and I so there will be other activities as well. I want to hunt kudu, blesbok, and steinbok in the East Cape area. Between March and June which would be the better time frame?

Thanks again for all the friendly advice.

Good day sir,
We are situated in the Eastern Cape, so our establishment tick that box within your requirements. June is certainly cooler weather as compared to March, and without a doubt more comfortable hunting weather. With Kudu and Steenbuck on your list, my advice would be to pay more attention to the moon phase, than the time of the year. One can adapt with the moon, but hunting animals such as Kudu and Steenbuck, the moon will play a role in the movements during the day. Try and aim for a dark moon cycle. Blesbuck won't be a problem, as they are grazers, which inherently mean that they will be out in the plains most of the day, whether feeding, or lying down.

Tale Care,
Marius Goosen
