Joined this site looking for info on African plains game shot placement. Planning a trip for the first week or so of May, 2016. Need info on what to expect for bowhunting the Limpopo region during that time of year. Will also do rifle hunting. Trying to get there before full winter. These old bones (65) don't hold up the way they used to. I'm a 30 year vet and commanded 2 ships. Great life!! Would welcome any insight regarding hunting the rut, bowhunting waterhole effectiveness, general weather conditions actually observed. Thanks

Welcome to AH Coleman,

May should be a good month. I went to Zimbabwe in April and had a great time. Light jacket was all that i needed, as it warmed up during the day, so have layers and you should be fine with the clothing. With laundry being done daily or every 2 days, i have reduced my packing to 3 sets of clothing with a light pull over.

I am sure we will have a few resident PH get back to you on your proposed location.

Oh what are you looking to have a chance at?

That would help the PH in assisting you.

Welcome sir. And thank you for your service.

Welcome to AH Coleman Landers!

Coleman welcome to AH,

Thank you for your service. May is a great time, the weather is comfortable, the bush tends to be a bit thicker than in winter. but early hunts the tend to be less skittish. Are you going to spot and stalk or use a hide? Most bow hunting is done from a hide over water or feeding areas.

Good luck and we hope you have a great time.

I've conveyed my desires to my prospective PH. Outfitter selected and has great recommendations. Blesbuck, Blue Wildebeest, Kudu, Gemsbuck, Impala, Warthog, Bushpig.

I will bowhunt from a blind/ hide. I'm comfortable shooting out to 45-50 yards in the clear. I know my percentages go up for me within 30 yards. Thus, my choice to hunt from a blind vice stalking. I did take a Black Bear with my bow this May at 20 yards in Canada. Easy shot if you don't get too excited and have practiced which I had done. Thanks for the info about May. My concern also was about how the rut would affect bowhunting over waterholes given the greenery available for water in the foliage. Seems like it will be ok.

Thanks. I certainly intend to enjoy this opportunity.

Welcome to AH Capt. Landers! I was not in the navy but worked quite closely as a nuke engineer at NRF, Idaho in the early 90's. Still have some friends serving. Enjoy the planning of your upcoming safari, it's part of the fun.

Welcome aboard Skipper. Had I not wanted to be in the military so much, I might have considered joining the Navy. :) - 29 years Army. Some great folks here with great advice and experience to share.

Thanks. I'm sure your service equaled or surpassed mine. I was slated to be a Nuke while i was enlisted for 2 years prior to commissioning. Those 2 years set the table for my career. Thanks again but I had a blast. I used to tell my mom that if we hadn't had a navy, they'd have had to invent it just for me. I enjoyed my time that much. hahaha

Cute!! I expected as much as I posted my branch and rank. Next will come the comments about officers. That's ok though. Heard mostly everything. Thanks again. Glad to have found this site.
