Thanks so much for reminding me that I have a .458 which hasn't been fired for several months. Pity that I am 5,000 miles away and it will be a while.

Was the Federal round loaded with a 500 grain Woodleigh Hydrostatic monolithic solid bullet or a 500 grain bronze jacketed Trophy Bonded Sledgehammer Solid bullet ? And how old are the Federal rounds ?

No, not Hydros. Not sure what they are, I’ll see if it’s written on the box. I bought both boxes at the same time a few years ago, not sure how long they were sitting at the shop.

Not for factory rounds, but I just chronographed my whitworth yesterday with 72 grains of Win 748. 500 grain hornady solid, 24" barrel was giving me 2,125 fps at the muzzle. No pressure signs at all. This was a magnetospeed chronograph. Temp here was 91°F and the rounds had been sitting in my car for a bit. So... some real chronograph data for this thread.

I measured the velocity with a Lab Radar of Nosler Safari ammo in .458 Win with 500 gr solid (brass, I believe) bullets.

Results were:
Average velocity: 2139 FPS
Extreme spread: 13 FPS

Shot with 25" barrels, Heym 88B

I don't know where you're located, but I'd be happy to let you try out my Krieghoff. I'm located in West Tennessee and the local gun club has a skeet layout and is located not far from my farm. We're about five miles from the Kentucky state line and about 100 miles west of Nashville.
I just joined today, I live in Louisiana. I joined mostly because of all of the 35 Whelen discussion as I am now very interested In the 35 Whelen. I have an 1885 Highwall that J.E.S.S. rebored to 35 Whelen

Also own 338s 375 and both a 416 rem and Rigby
