Suppressors on DG Rifles?

Does it make sense to hunt with a suppressor on a rifle like a 375HH or 9.3x62? Planning to get a new barrel for an R8 and wondering if I should get it threaded…thx

Provided that the countries you would be taking the rifle don't have issues with suppressors it would probably be alright.

Only disadvantage i see is a suppressor makes the gun longer and thus harder to get through dense bush.

Otherwise i think its a great idea. Ive often dreamed of a shorter barreled 458 Lott with a suppressor. Something like a 16-18 inch barrel would reduce problems caused by length.

With the growing popularity of suppressors, this is going to become more common whether we like it or not. 30-40 years ago, it would have been looked down upon and even illegal in many places.

I've go no problem with it other than the mechanical ones others mentioned. Suppressors capable of being used on big bores can be large in diameter, and my question would be will it work with the iron sights?

You may even have to raise the scope height and comb height to clear the suppressor.

I’d consider it for an R8 barrel. At very least, it will make practice a lot easier. I don’t think it will be practical DG hunting though except on particular hunts. It will take up part of scope on low power and be cumbersome in thick brush. It’s also only legal in Namibia and South Africa. It’s not legal in the majority of DG countries even though some people do successfully bring them.

Good in theory, bad in practice with current tech. For example, if you cut a 458 Lott barrel down far enough to put a silencer co hybrid 46 on there, say 18, add another 7” for the suppressor. It wouldn’t be totally unwieldy but the velocity loss would be a big factor. This is exactly why caliber are being developed for suppression. Suppressors are great on lighter more plains game type rifles, but I think there is a long way to go before they make much sense on a big bore dangerous game rifle. I have a threaded for break Ed brown 458 Lott. It has a 24” barrel, I have screwed my older 45 hybrid on it….there is no way I would use that config in africa…..might be fun in the back yard with reduced loads ,…but it’s like handling a railroad tie.

we cut down all our rifles with suppressors on, also get a suppressor that has removable segments, thus allowing you to not add much length but still get some if not all sound and recoil suppressed
also get a suppressor that fits "over" the end of the barrel not just screwing on the end, so the full length of suppressor is not "added" to the full length of barrel
eg the atec suppressors are very good and have segments
take a 22'' barrel, cut off 4'', suppressor is mayber 6 or 7'' and it overlaps barrel by 2'' u only adding 1 or 2 inches, remove 1 segment of suppressor and u back to original length

note: do your homework on performance and balistics first before just shortening barrels

The best way to do this without having a significant impact on weight and balance is to have an integrally suppressed barrel made. I’m not sure who would be able to help you with one of these in a DG legal caliber.

The added length and weight of a traditional suppressor makes things much more challenging in the field. Personally, I’d invest the money in some custom molded electronic hearing protection.

I don't understand something. It may be that you have as shooter and firearms enthusiast some experience with rifles of larger calibers, but you wrote in your first post on this Forum that you have never hunt before. Now you want to start hunting with DG rifles and even equip them with suppressors?,...somewhat unusual in my opinion.

You got away with it but they are not legal. I wouldn’t expect your PH to care while hunting, but it’s a risk while traveling and in town depending who sees it.

Why would you want to add weight and length to an already heavier than average rifle? It will result in your being slower to bring the rifle to bear and the benefits are small. A can does reduce recoil somewhat but it you are that sensitive to recoil you might be in the wrong game. One of the best DG rifles I ever saw was one of my PH's backup rifles. It was a Brno in 458wm that he had a gunsmith shorten the bbl to 20". It made a lighter, handy package and at 20-30y the velocity is still plenty fast to do the job. I am sure the blast was impressive but he did not have to shoot it in my presence.

Cans are great but they are unwieldy in a big magnum rated package. It simply makes it impossible to easily carry the rifle on your shoulder in the classic African Safari style. After all, looking right is far more important than function. Am I right? (joking)

Plus, how do you screw on a double rifle suppressor?

It was anyway illegal to bring my rifle to Zimbabwe due to EU weapon ban…

Might be you’re reading between the lines. I didn’t say I wanted to start hunting with a DG rifle. Nor did I say I wanted to equip with a suppressor. I asked a question, does it makes sense to use a suppressor…

As to why would I ask about using a suppressor, as someone said, hearing protection, concussion, spooking the herd…

As to why I would want a DG rifle now, perhaps I start hunting with a 308, then over the next couple years, I gain experience and familiarize myself with the larger caliber to shoot it well. Heaven forbid I travel half way around the world and don’t know my equipment and lack speed and accuracy. That would be bad for the animal, bad for anyone I’m with, and bad for myself.

Two ways to go when suppressing a rifle.
The traditional thread on the end of the barrel.
The Reflex or back over the barrel method.

Both most likely require removing thr front sight to have the barrel threaded. Unless you are using a Ruger Hawkeye, Blasser or another factory threaded barrel.

The back over the barrel requires no front sight or a removable front sight.

My buddy used an AB suppressor Raptor 10 on his Blasser in 375 H&H. This was a reflex suppressor.

Another friend used a Hybrid 46M on his Ruger in 375 Ruger. A traditional thread on the end of the barrel.
