Straight Pull Rifles?

Wife and I have Blaser R8’s and really enjoy them. Another advantage of the Blaser design over the others is the capability of using a wider variety of DG cartridges that aren’t available in many other straight pull options.

416RM, 458LOTT & 500J are all available and can be shot with the same receiver that you use for 22lr practice.

I have a list somewhere with all the advantages of the R8 over other designs. Suffice to say that if I made a list for it, it’s significant.

Have you looked at Strasser They are really Nice and comes with a Remington 700 footprint, so you can get a lot of stuff for them (triggers, stock etc.)

I was looking at a Savage Impulse. Thinking I might need a new light caliber rifle for yotes.

I built a semi custom 6mm AI on a savage impulse a couple years back. It’s the best savage action in my opinion. And after getting broken in, very slick. I’ll find a pic and post it.

My semi custom savage impulse 6mm ai with 26” proof sendero contour. They don’t have to be hideous, I kind of like the way mine looks. It’s also my most accurate hunting rifle, routinely shoots .3 moa with a 100 grain tipped game king. I like it because i can throw it in a canvas scabbard and slip it in front of my cake box on my feed pickup or the toolbox on my farm pickup and not care that it’s getting bounced around or beat on.

I think you will like it and you can't go wrong with Beretta. Straight pull is superior for hunting because it's faster. People will get mad at that fact just like they get mad when someone explains that the .375 Ruger is superior to the H&H. You don't have to like it but it's just a fact!

I love straight pull action rifles because I'm used to my Blaser's. I own 5 of them (2 R93 and 3 R8) and except the price that keep increasing, they are awesome.

I bought last year a Steel Action but its barrel sucks ! Impossible to get a good accuracy with mine but hopefully, it should be solved soon. The bolt is very smooth and for people who don't like alloy, it's a good option. However, the magazine is not well conceived ! With my .338 Winchester magnum, you can't use CIP length cartridge with big round nose bullets because of a small triangle at the front of the magazine. I already had a jam because of this problem. In comparison, the Blaser feeds everything without any hiccups and even flat nose bullets.
My father has a Merkel RX Helix and it works well but I won't trust the system for Africa hunting.
He also bought earlier this year a Mauser M25 and I haven't shot with it yet, but it's an interesting rifle. It has the smoother bolt I have ever handle and the price is not very high in comparison to Blaser. It doesn't have a take down barrel and we can't choose to use it as a right handed or left-handed out of the box like the Beretta; but I prefer it over the Italian.
The Browning Maral didn't impress me. It's probably a good rifle for driven hunt but for accuracy, we never arrived to obtain something well.
Another straight pull action I like is the Heym SR30 and some are affordable.

Saturday, I was able to handle the new Walther RS3. I really loved the balance, the trigger and how smooth is the straigh pull action. At this stage, only avalaible in .308 Winchester but if they introduce it later in 9.3x62, I might buy one with the synthethic stock. My little complain is about the magazine that is designed to use pointed bullets and once again, with round nose bullets, I think some issues can occur.

If you’re determined to do a straight pull blaser is really the best option. They pioneered the tech and they are pretty good rifles. I’ve seen some nice Chapuis Rols as well. There are die hard fans of the blaser on this site and they will list at length their logic about speed and barrel interchangeability but the reality is that’s all training. Like saying a semi auto pistol is always faster than a revolver—-just not so. I just watched a guy use a blaser on a safari classics video over the weekend and there were literally a few “wtf” moments watching the guy dick with that safety/cocking mechanism, and it wasn’t the first time I’ve seen that in a video.

I’ve also seen instances of this on YT. Semi-auto, lever action, traditional bolt…etc.

Regardless of the rifle action, one must be completely familiar with its manual of arms and its operation.

It’s one thing to have it happen with PG, but being unprepared on a DG hunt puts everyone in the hunting party at risk.

I’ve been lucky enough to shoot them all. Savage, Mauser, Blaser, Merkel etc.

There is zero, nothing, zilch, nada, wrong with the BRX.
Shooting Norma factory ammo, the 30-06 and 300WM that I’ve handled made me question why people need reloading equipment.
Literally 1 slightly ragged hole at 100m.

Anyone that tells you that a straight pull is faster than a bolt action, obviously hasn’t seen an experienced German driven hunter running a bolt.
Been there, done that with a stop watch and the bolt won every time.
