Bull shark swims by Gold Coast back yards after floods

A bull shark has reportedly been spotted in floodwaters near a Queensland man’s back fence after a week of wild weather caused flash flooding in the area.

That is more than a thousand miles upstream from the Gulf of Mexico. They have been fairly regularly reported in the river every few years up to Baton Rouge, Louisiana which is more than 200 miles by river to the Gulf.

When I lived in Nicaragua we used to go and fish for Bull Sharks and Saw Fish in the fresh water Lake Nicaragua. These sharks would swim up through the Rio San Juan, and take up permanent residence in Lake Nicaragua. If I recall correctly, Jacques Cousteau dove the lake in search of these sharks. I don't recall of any attacks in the lake, but I'm sure they happened in some of the remote areas of the lake.

Not sure anyone does it in the Mississippi itself, but in the smaller rivers and streams yes. Though, I have always thought that it was an insane sport. There are snapping turtles big enough and grumpy enough to take off fingers or most of a hand all through the Southeast - not to mention water moccasins and the occasional gator. Then again, give a redneck enough Pabst Blue Ribbon ...........

Ha Ha! Yeah I don't quite get the draw to it either. It's counterintuitive to everything I was taught in the name of self-preservation.

Believe it or not, there are some PBL connoisseurs even up this far north trying it in and around Lake Pepin (Mississippi flows through it) and along the banks where it widens. Apparently they've has some success because I hear there are more every summer.

I grew up 15 miles from there and I've seen the snapping turtles that come out of there.

Bass fisherman are not impressed.

Though I did pull this up on the web. If true, it would almost certainly have been a bull shark.

It ain't the sharks in the water you have to worry about. It's the bastards on the land y'all go to watch out for. Like politicians, lawyers, car salesman some gun sellers as well as other breeds of sharks.

I think so in the fifties at a river crossing near Ipswich Australia.
I’m not sure if the bite was serious though. Colleges crossing.
