Did a surveillance training package in Memphis years ago, most cities you go to you're driving around and find yourself in a "rough neighborhood", it seemed like in Memphis when you were driving around you were MOSTLY in rough neighborhoods and nice ones were the rarity. Memphis was still a cool town though, especially if you're into good food. It's definitely a city with its own identity, and a lot of potential, much less "corporate" feeling than Nashville, the crime there is really unfortunate.
I was just back there this past weekend for the Memorial Day holiday visiting with family..
It was a great city to do police work in if you were the sort of guy that wanted to get into the thick of things.. especially if you were in specialized units like narcotics, vice, swat, gang task force, etc.. and an absolutely terrible place to work if you were the sort of guy that wanted to get into law enforcement to help old ladies to cross the street, get cats out of trees, etc... there was certainly never a lack of things to do lol..
Even the places that were relatively good parts of the city when I was there (Germantown, Cordova, East Memphis, etc) have largely turned to shit these days.. Lots of people have fled Shelby County and have moved south into Mississippi or north into Tipton county...
I was surprised to see/hear that while still an absolute shit hole, West Memphis (AR) has started to grow a little bit, has attracted some new businesses, etc.. when I was there West Memphis was about as bad as you could find a place in the Memphis metro area..
If youre a foodie or into music (blues, rock, soul, gospel, rap, and R&B are all super well represented there) its definitely a very cool place to visit still... you just have to remain VERY aware of where you are and whats going on around you... there is still an entire battalion of National Guard as well as an additional 150 state troopers deployed to metro Memphis right now... and crime remains completely out of control..
The city has some unique demographic and some unique geospatial issues that contribute quite a bit to the crime rate.. combine that with a history of outrageously corrupt politicians at the municipal, state, and federal level hailing from the city.. and Im not sure if Memphis will ever turn around... its got a whole lot going against it.. .
Once my parents pass from this world Im not sure I'll ever return... I spent 30+ years of my life there.. got my first bachelors degree from Memphis State University.. met the woman that would end up being my wife there.. owned a business there for a few years.. etc..etc.. and other than a handful of living relatives that remain, theres honestly nothing left to ever draw me back..
