Only because he was a better public speaker than Trump.
If the exact things Reagan said came out of Trump's mouth, the left would hate him just the same.
whats funny is much of what Trump say is parroting Reagan..
Reagans 1980 campaign slogan was... "Make America Great Again".. and much of Reagans platform that he ran on in 1980 is identical to what Trump ran on...
Reagans first term was all about regulatory rollbacks..
Trumps first term was very focused on regulatory rollbacks...
Both Reagan and Trump spoke at length about "America First" priorities..
Both Reagan and Trump are major critics of "big government"..
Both Reagan and Trump made immigration a major priority..
Reagan spoke to America needing to resume its place as the "shining city on a hill".. trump has been quoted many times speaking about the importance of America becoming respected again (same theme)..
Reagan hated entrenched bureaucrats and political elites... Trump also hates entrenched bureaucrats and political elites (the swamp)..
Trump and his advisors clearly attempt to echo Reagan every opportunity they are given...
Reagan was simply "the great communicator".. and Trump is a "mean tweeter"...
Anyone that says they have high respect for Reagan policy but at the same time hates Trump policy.. clearly doesnt know anything about Reagan or Trump...
Liking them as people is another matter all together.. Trump externally isnt very likeable at all.. although to a man, every single person I have known that has worked close to him and Melania will tell you that they are very friendly, kind, caring people that go out of their way to take care of their staff, etc.... While Reagan was "the great communicator"...
The problem is people often cant get past their emotions.. Trump isnt likeable.. therefore he is wrong..
Which frankly is stupid... he doesnt have to be likeable or hated to be right or wrong.. the two are mutually independent..
I personally dont like the guy much at all...
But I can recognize when he does things that I think will positively impact the country (like shutting down the border, pushing for deregulation, kicking Irans ass, etc)... and when he does things that I think might have negative impact (bullying allies, etc)... I dont have to like him to make common sense decisions based on facts..
It appears a number of members here have emotions far too strong to do that however.. emotion is far more important than fact for them it seems..
