I can tell you that proportion: You have a Command Element to control things, then you have a Ground Combat Element made up of a reinforced infantry battalion (reinforced by things like enough amphibious vehicles to carry one of the infantry companies, some light armored vehicles, a battery of artillery, some combat engineers, etc., an Aviation Combat Element made up of a composite helicopter squadron (Ospreys, Cobras, Hueys, Sea Stallions, and maybe even F-35s, (there's your combat force), and a battalion sized Logistics Combat Element covering all six combat service support functions.
All of them can perform as a rifleman.
And that's a MEU.
You wouldn't believe how big a MEB is.
A MEU is almost certainly what is deploying… they’re roughly 2200 personnel when at full strength…
The F35’s on the Tripoli will almost certainly support the ongoing air campaign.. the rotary wing assets, FAST team, and reconnaissance elements would almost certainly be used for VBSS operations in the area… etc… deploying a MEU makes perfect sense for the current situation..
But.. it most certainly isn’t an invasion force…
When the 82nd, 10th Mtn, and 101st all start to load onto C17’s, that is a sure indicator that things are about to dramatically change…
2000 Marines getting on board a ship stateside to take a 2 week trip to get to the shores of Iran in no way represents “Iraq revisited” as Pondoro pontificates..
