Thanks for the warm welcoms and suggestions, the 7x57 would be a close match to the 6.5x55 but you have the option of a heavier bullet so with a 170 grain bullet you have about 10% more energy at 300 yards! I haven't really consider the 308 because I already have the 30-06 but it's something to consider

I really like the 6.5x55. It is a very reasonable cartridge. If you load your own it does not take a lot of powder and recoil is minimal. I am still fiddling with mine so have no experience on anything at ranges you are talking about. However I think the 120gr ttsx would be great

A .270, .308, or .30-06 would do the trick at 400yds.
