Bass Pro Shops hooks Cabela's in $5.5 billion deal

Is Great Northern Guns in Anchorage?

Yes, and I'm glad you caught that, while I still had time to edit/correct my omission in that post.

Reedy, Am I correct in that you would have thought this was primarily a CNBC investor event and are completely surprised of the posts it has generated? I am!

This has been rumored to be coming for some time now. The Kansas. City store is so low on inventory going there is not the adventure it once was. I have purchased so many items from that store that I cringe at what I've spent there over the last 13 years. To everyone's point about the uninformed sales staff I have to agree. When you can find someone to help they don't know much. So This will give us three Bass Pro shops in. Kansas City now!

Many of us hold Cabelas Visa cards and have built up points that are redeemable towards store purchases. What will happen to our points? Will the gift cards be honored?

I will be using my points !

Cabelas was scheduled to open anew store in Lees Summit, MO in late 2017. Bet that doesn't happen now.

They just opened a Cabelas here in Ottawa a little over a week ago. Strange but for 2 years we were told that a Basspro would be opening in Ottawa. Full circle it appears. Us Canucks get hosed on ammo and reloading supplies no matter where we buy it but at least they have stock. Guess I'll have to stock up again.

Actually the one thing I do like about Bass Pro is their clothing. It's reasonably priced and good quality, the Red Head stuff. I really like their shorts and shirts.

agree.

@Ridge Top Ranch I bet you are 100% right on that because there is a Bass Pro already there at I70 and I 470. I am not even sure the metro area can support three Bass Pro shops. Although they would have the major directions into the city covered

I heard this rumor for a while. Agree with posts that say not a lot of knowledge in the various hunting Dept about the equipment. Also, the pricing was never that good. I did go a few times per year due to the availability they had on hunting items. But if I wasn't in a big rush I could usually find online cheaper.

Maybe it's just me but I've found both to be good and bad depending on what your looking for. Cabelas tends to be better for hunting equipment in general and basspro for fishin stuff. I've never had a problem with either store. Typically if I'm looking for something specialized I'll get it from a specialty retailer anyway. Idk? I tend to like both. I hope this will improve service for both places. Where I live all we have is a gander mountain, talk about crappy service and boobs working there. Holly smokes. There is only 1 guy there at the firearms counter that knows what the hell hes doing. If you can't find what your looking for and he's not there forget it.

What's wrong with boobs?! Oh wait.......

:LOL: wrong kind of boobs. But for good measure.

Occasionally when something like this happens the buyer sees the intrinsic value in the heights once reached by the purchased company. They may then seek to restore those heights to achieve a "boutique" model separated from their own volume based sales model.

That way they retain their existing customer base while building a newer, lower volume, higher value customer base.

But I wouldn't count on it in this case.......

Not with all those gigantic stores I wouldn't think, unless they plan to close a bunch of them, which they may very well do.

Perfect @gizmo!

I never thought Miller and Budweiser would join forces and unfortunately 2 giant sporting good stores joined forces now too. I really don't buy anything from either, prices have not been reasonable for years!

I gave up on Bass Pro five years or so ago. Mostly junk except for fishing. I've still been pleased with Cabelas, but am selective in what I purchase. I expect it to just go down hill from here.

In an open letter, Bass Pro Shop's CEO Johnny Morris has stated Customer Loyalty Programs from both outlets (Cabela's BUCKS and BPS's REWARDS) will remain unaffected.
I would put up a link to the letter but the only site I can find hosting it has pop-ups like you wouldn't believe...

My Dealings with Cabelas (at least here in Minnesota) has always been a pleasant Experience and I have always found their employees to be nowledgeable the same can't be said of the local Gander Mountain

Sir, I will gladly take that 16 gauge off your hands. I was waiting for your Winchesters but I'm a sucker for a 16 ga.

I bought a great deal of the brass he had for sale, plus I already had many hundred rounds.

How much brass are you looking for?
