Bass Pro Shops hooks Cabela's in $5.5 billion deal

I live dead inbetween basspro and cabelas stores 3 miles to each. In my opinion Basspro is cheap chineese junk with poor customer serive. Cabelas has been going down hill since public I totaly agree there is nothing in stock ever in the cabelas store they walk around with computer ipads and say oh we will be happy to order for you and they will not match their own online prices in the store! sad days ahead
Buckdog, I wholly agree with you about a sales person in almost any type store saying "We can order that for you". I tell them I can do that,,,,,and usually do!!!

Here in Colorado I use to shop Gart Brothers and Dave Cooks a long long time ago. When pheasant hunting in Nebraska I'd stop by Cabelas in Kearny and shop. Today I mainly Internet shop even from Cabelas. I hate the busy hour drive through major traffic to Cabelas and hour and a half to Bass Pro. Gander Mountain used to be a discount catalog order business.
I don't believe you can find a chain store with the knowledge base the mom and pop stores have. You guys have too high of expectations for over grown businesses.
Even bank presidents or VPs use to greet you and call you by name after a few trips to the bank.
To many people? To fast paced lives? To little humanity left? Just glad I'm on the short side of life. I'd hate being one of my grand kids or great grand kids and know what life was like 50 - 60 years ago. Sad they cannot have the wonderful experience of no interstates, 55 mph roads, fresh wild meat on the table, clear skies, clean smelling rains...sad
Ridge walker,
Well said I've experienced all the events that you have. Also from Colorado.
I will say the fantastic folks I have met thru Cabelas were the epitome of very good service and honest American values from a wonderful home grown business. End of an era . Thanks to all the commitments from Dick and Mary to SCI it has made this hunting community so much stronger for us and more importantly our grandkids. Can't wait to take my grandson Zane to Africa. He's only 2. But Papa has a plan....

I liked Sportman's Warehouse until they decided to end all relations, east of the Mississippi river. I loved their store. People complained about their prices but it was all quality goods and they had coupons too.

I think the Internet provides awesome opportunity to deal with great smaller stores. I ordered my back pack from Grouse River in BC but when they had a stocking problem they found one in stock at a totally unrelated company in Ottawa! My trijicon from Alberta, bullets from BC, Ontario and the USA (pain in the butt with the export restrictions) my A bolt from New Brunswick, my... You get the idea. I still go to Bass Pro for stuff on occasion, but I find the small guys know their stuff and treat you like a valued customer, regardless of where the store is physically.
