After a few quiet weeks with the flu we were starting to feel better and in need of some time by the river. And the dog needed meat, too. We found this old bull, in his last or maybe second-last season. He’s a giant for our area, with genes more similar to coastal bulls. The shot distance was 120m and I told myself to aim small, shooting from the side of a tree. It was a frontal heart-shot, and he only went fifty metres before falling dead.

It was a beautiful evening by the river, and our dog was pretty happy when we got home. We left her behind because she hates the bush - too many bad memories from when she was homeless trying to evade dingoes.

The rifle is an Australian-made custom 1938 Oberndorf Mauser in .300H&H, made for me a couple of years ago by Tony Small.

That is a great looking rifle, obviously very capable of getting the job done. Looks like there is meat enough for more than just your dog!!

Beautiful bull, and beautiful rifle!

Great bull and beautiful rifle in the best 30 Mag

Ripper bull mate, jealous as! Keep up the good work!

Is the 300 hh similar to a win mag? Dont know a lot about em

Beautiful rifle, great looking bull, and my favorite .30 caliber cartridge.

Thank you! From what I’ve read the .300H&H is slightly behind the .300WM in top velocity.
Yes, but it is way over the top on the "cool" index. Great bull and lovely rifle.

Great bull! Congrats! I want to hunt for one of those too! You obviously live there. Are they challenging to hunt and do they taste any good? The .300 H&H is what most of the other .300's are based on I believe. Only issue in the USA is probably not a lot of availability for ammo.

Lots of ammo available in North America. But with new powder and bullet selection it is a whole new gun.

Sometimes a hunt goes so smoothly it seems easy! Other times it seems like they’re the most switched-on creatures on Earth! Sometimes they make mistakes, sometimes they don’t. They taste good, and the meat is lean.

The cartridge has heaps of reloading options.

Thanks for the answer. Those hunts seem to run about 8-9K for US hunters. That is why I asked if it was a challenging hunt. But again, my main goal (like always anywhere, lol) is to visit the area as it seems like a great place.

Overall it is very challenging to hike and locate an old bull in the heat, and then stalk into range - especially with an open-sighted big bore rifle.

Awesome to hear! I will be that way in the next 2-4 years no matter what.

I would like to make a cull buffalo hunt myself.

More that a few of us think the H&H is actually better than the Winchester version (which is based on the H&H, shortened, blown out and with a short neck).

The H&H has a nice long neck for gripping bullets...and hiding grease grooves on cast bullets. Not to mention it is a classic!

Sir, I think I have been writing to you about the purchase of the HK 639 rifle under an email "Tt Jake." If this is you, then I am truly interested. I am just trying to verify identify. Tt Jake is asking for a cash transaction. No disrespect intended, Just trying to verify who I am talking to. Thank you. Respectfully. Dan

Hey my friend, I am returning to SA for a Cape Buffalo hunt in June 26. My outfitter has suggested Highveld but I have read some poor reports. Wondering how satisfied you were with your mounts from them? Thanks in advance.
Finally back to somewhat normal I missed reading the messages and posts
