How has Everyone’s Hunting Season at Home been?

Keep the stories coming! Monday I went in to get the 2 screws removed from my leg, and they said I had broken them both (the screws that is) and the tendons weren’t healed up enough. So they put in 3 new screws and said no walking for 4 weeks! I must have busted them in Africa in September, but I’d still go do it all again! Now my hunting plans at home have been shelved. I need your stories to get me through! .

My hunting season hasn't really got going for myself yet, but in October we took my buddy's wife out for moose and she got this bull.

Spent the last few days trying to get my brother (who is a new hunter) a mule deer. Got him on a few nice bucks, but he couldn't get it done. I managed to check his rifle on this coyote though.

Well I will jump in. Our muzzleloader season started Saturday with temps 22deg. watched a lot of deer but nothing to push the safety off for. Sunday much the same. Monday I was watching a large deer out my window at home before daylight, just kept watching as it ran around chasing does. As it got light, I could see the flash of antlers, and began to make out a really nice rack on one side. as he turned, the other side looked odd and narrow. I watched until I had to go to work, he disappeared into the creekbed a hundred yards from the house. That evening I was finishing up supper when began to see deer moving early. I began watching intently and saw movement exactly where I saw him last. He hadn't moved 5 yards all day. I decided that he should be out of the gene pool even though you only get one buck tag during muzzleloader season. I grabbed my T/C omega and went out in my socks through the garage and past the barn to about 80 yards, squeezed the trigger and through the cloud of smoke watched him drop in his tracks. Got my shoes on and went to get the tractor with loader bucket as I am extremely lazy about dragging deer if I don't have to. (I think Africa has spoiled me when it comes to packing out game) When I drove up to the deer I thought was a good cull deer, I could see the side I thought was 5 points was actually 6, and the gnarly side was actually 9 points. This deer was well over 200 lbs as well. After looking at the teeth I could tell he was a 6 yr old and I was very happy to take him. Pictures aren't posed like Africa, but well, I told you I was lazy.
Thanks for starting this post!View attachment 207885 View attachment 207886

Great looking buck K.

Nothing says deer hunting in Oklahoma like recovery with a front end loader.

Feel for you man, 2014 I shattered my knee. Couldn’t put it on the ground for 4 months. Missed dove season, bow season, black powder season. But shot the biggest buck I’ve ever gotten opening morning of rifle (still on crutches). Thank the lord for good friends that drug him out and field dressed him for me.
Hope you’re back up ang going soon.

Thanks guys! Sure can't ask for much more out of a eastern NC deer.
Hopefully one of these days I'll have some African animals to post on here ;)

Been a very quiet year for me on the home front here in Australia as I'm saving money and leave for a huge 2018 (a month in Africa and a week back in NZ)

I did manage a wet season hunt up in tropical North Queensland where I hunted this nice Chital stag (Axis). Otherwise I've shot a couple of fallow for the freezer but not much else...had a good backpack hunt for sambar but photos was all I took. Here's a few pictures, cheers.

Been a slow hunting season for me at Home. Moved just before huntin season so hasn’t put in the groundwork I normally would. Now have a great lease 3 hours from home I haven’t hunted since bow season and been hunting state land only. Finally put one down last night that was chasing a doe. Pretty 6 point I’ve had on camera couple times. My cameras have been slow this year and he was the only decent size deer I’ve had this year. Hopefully take a couple does and be happy for the season. Next year will be better with more time to scout

Take care of that break! You need to get back outside in good shape! Tendon repair can be a long slow process. Be patient!

Been bow hunting for 9 seasons now, I've shot 4 does and missed a buck back in 2011 that I misjudged the distance on.
Well this year paid off. Have a stand I have been hunting for 3 years now that I have passed on several smaller bucks at (land I hunt has 15inch inside spread limit), pretty sure I saw this deer several times there last year.
First afternoon hunting this season he walked out about 5 minutes before dark right at 20 yards broadside, 30 seconds later it was all over when I heard him crash down 75 yards away. Still living off the excitement! View attachment 208083

Great buck, especially for our area! Send his brother down my way!

At home, no deer for me. I passed numerous small bucks hoping to cross paths with Mr. Big to no avail.

Abroad is another story, great hunts with Rhinoster Hoek and LJ Safaris.

well hunting this year got off to a slow start as I let a friend talk me into working with him at a farm/feedlot operation this summer and fall.we started the corn harvest on opening day of deer season.I carried a rifle with me either in the tractor or a grain truck for about ten days without ever getting the opportunity to use it on anything. After about 10 days of packing in in and out of the house I decided to leave it at home, well you guessed it ,we opened a corn field to combine and pushed out a nice 4x4 muley buck and 3 small white tail bucks.the white tail went back into the corn but the muley headed for a tree row about 300 yards away,I got out my cell phone and called my son and ask him to bring my 25=06 out to me,mean while I went and unloade my load of corn.when my rifle arrived I went back down to the tree row and proceeded to see if the muley was bedded in there ,and he was after waiting what seemed like forever for him to get up and present a shot he finaly did.dressed him out and sent him home with my son and I went back for anouther load of corn. this part time work is starting to mess with being retired, now I'm chasing sandhills and dark geese.happy hunting to all

My archery season has went pretty well, I took a P&Y mule deer in my home state on a DIY on public land along with a black phase red fox and 18 grouse. The elk didn't cooperate here in Idaho but I went to Montana and connected on a 5x6 bull after archery closed in Idaho. Am going to bowhunt whitetails in Montana for the next few weeks.

Finally off the schneid! Mistook a button buck for a doe at last light and when to cuss myself when I thought better of it. I was blessed enough to go out to the woods and harvest one of God’s creatures to feed my family with. It wasn’t what I had planned, but a successful hunt is a successful hunt and I am truly blessed.

I posted about it but I took my 4 year old out on his first hunting/camping trip and when we seen this one in a field he asked me to shoot it. So like a good father I did. He was 37 in wide there were bigger ones out where I was but he wanted this one. (Probably because it was the first one he seen while hunting for one lol) so my season was over the first day but wouldn't change a thing.

Well..... I got to shoot some doves the first two weekends of dove season. I then got to spend two and a half hours in a stand last month during archery deer season but that’s it for me.
I have, however, got to guide some awesome hunts and had a blast doing that! And..... got to take one of my two favorite “clients” (my son) and put him on a nice cull buck youth weekend.

Hopefully my other favorite “client” ‘s ( my daughter) schedule gets to where I can take her hunting before too long.
I will say I have been watching ducks pile in by the hundreds on one of my lakes while out guiding hunts and it’s freakin killing me. As many know waterfowling is like my favorite thing in the universe and we have a huge cold front coming in tonight. I’d just about give my left arm to be in my duck blind tomorrow but it ain’t gunna happen. :(

No joy on rifle elk (bull) this year, but it was great to just get out in the mountains.
Montana yielded this old pronghorn buck and another for my buddy. Must be my lucky “Kruger Park” huntin’ hat :D

I’ll be hunting whitetail deer and cow elk from the 16th through the 22nd of November, and then it’s wolf, mountain lion, bobcat and coyote ‘til March. So still plenty of hunting to do! :)

Bro! We’re gonna need some pics! :D
A DIY, public land, P&Y Mule Deer is a hell of an accomplishment! Ya gotta share ;)

Love your rifle! I'm needing a heavier rifle for Africa. Sold my .375 Dakota Safari several trips ago. Would you have any interest in a trade of some sort involving the custom 338/06 I have listed here on the site ( I have some room on my asking price. I also have a large quantity of the reloading components and new Redding dies as well as a box of A-Square Dead Tough ammo.
