Last week my 7 year old son and I spent a wonderful week bow hunting with my farther and brother in northern Michigan. Our buck to doe ratio is out of wack so we don't have any issues taking a doe, on the last day of the hunt the good Lord placed a nice doe 40 yards from the stand but he also placed a small branch 30 yards in front of the same doe. We never did find that crossbow bolt but fortunately it was a clean miss so the only thing hurt was my pride. Around camp we call that "Choking in the face of Venison".
This was Trip's 3rd hunting season with me and I have to tell you, you have no idea what you can get away with in a tree stand until you hunt with a small child. Three times during the week Trip turned to me and whispered "Daddy I have to use the bathroom" each time we had deer in the food plot 60 yards in front of us, all 3 times he let fly over the side of the stand and all 3 times the deer never moved.
This years hunt also marked my 39 consecutive year of hunt with my father (
@Shootist43). I have lived in Kansas City for the last 22 years but every fall I leave the land of big deer and return to Northern Michigan to hunt with my father. Hunting for us is about spending time with family and passing on this wonder sport to our children.
Hunting gear has changed a lot since the days of white cotton long johns when I was 14, layers of fleece and an Ipad with head phones make all the difference in the world when hunting with little kids.
Trip tells me he wants to try hog hunting next year, I'm sure I'll make that happen.
