Report Scam in AH Classifieds

Thanks a lot for the tip. I’m sure he would have immediately divulged his intent over phone. Of course there’s things I could have done better. If you have foolproof methods, please publish a short whitepaper so others can be as resilient as you against these type scams
I understand you’re being sarcastic, but I’ll go ahead and write something for the benefit of others who actually care to understand these internet scams and protect themselves.

You are completely failing to understand the scam…You are not actually dealing with “Todd Reed”

They use these fake personas to have you send a money order to then steal it’s #’s and create a counterfeit version that they can cash for themselves. OR the next super common is that say the “hey the money order hasn’t showed up!” you can verify and see it’s never cashed on your end. They are telling the truth.
So they say, “hey we are this far just pay me on paypal so we can get this over with.” As you will just get your money back after 90 days anyways since it was lost in mail.

I also see the scammer used the photoshopped sticky note on top of a stolen image, Another classic. It’s poorly done as well.

The scammers messages have many hyphens “—“ meaning he’s using AI to generate responses as he most likely has broken English.

This is a foreign scammer, NOT Todd Reed.

There’s my “white paper” you sarcastically asked for.

Just ask for a phone call next time and watch the scammer tuck his tail.
As they no speaky good English

Just trying to help.
No need to be snarky and dumb.

I wonder if it ever occurs to scammers on a site such as this that those affected might take the violation of trust a personal matter and pursue an out of court settlement.

Thanks for the heads up!

SCAM ALERT: User Name "Buhog"

I was very nearly a victim of a scam from a member on here. I want everyone to know 1) the user name, but 2) more importantly the MO he used because he will no doubt change user name and keep doing it.

I recently posted a classified ad regarding WTB 0.358 bullets for a rifle project. I received a DM from user name Buhog. He said had a few boxes of A-Frame .358 280gr bullets to sell me. I pursed this offer in good faith, and then he also reported he also had a few boxes of 250gr A-Frames to sell me. We agreed on a deal for all 8 boxes. He asked that I send him a USPS money order to a certain name and address. I was nearly going to the post office over lunch when I googled the information he provided me. Turns out numerous outdoor related forums reported a nearly similar scam. The information he uses as a ruse is below:

Todd Reed
2011 Queens Highway
Kerhonkson NY 12446

He asked that I send him a photo of the mail order so he can "keep an eye on it".

After discovering numerous similar reports, I of course have corresponded with law enforcement in his county to report financial fraud. We will see how they respond as I continue to push full prosecution. I will exhaust all possible avenues to bring consequences to this person.

Just a heads up for anyone corresponding with Buhog. Some of the other forum posts I found had him replying under other usernames mocking the people reporting him, so be warned anyone contacting you under "WTB" posts are brazen and have no fear of consequences (at the moment at least).

After getting pissed and disappointed in humanity, I am actually mostly let down that I don't have 4 boxes of 0.358 280's and 4 boxes of 250's headed my way. Which in hindsight was too good to be true. The search for 0.358" premium bullets goes on.

Anyway, keep your heads on a swivel. Sorry to report this activity as I think this is mostly a decent forum with good members.

@Buhog has been banned. Thank you @M48scout for reporting this account.

I understand what you are saying. I initially interpreted your original reply as being glib and snarky. You make several good points. I was pissed last night about the whole matter, thus my tone.

Thanks for the post, to your point, others can learn from this.

As close to a foolproof method as is likely to exist, which I've preached ad nauseam, is to insist on a video call with the seller holding the item he's trying to sell and take a screen shot of them for future use if necessary. Don't know why there seems to be resistance to doing this. As the saying goes, "a fool and his money are soon parted"!

I am sorry if I came off the wrong way as well. No harm done.

apologies all around my friend.

Thanks, I am truly glad you sniffed out the scammer. Good work

Hey, saw your post. I bought from this seller before, item arrived as described and the transaction went smoothly. He mentioned having extras, but not sure if it’s still available. You can email him at vonsea87@gmail.com to check. Just passing it along!

This really smells bad. No posts, sent me this DM.

yep classic scammer move, run away laughing!

Trying to determine if I’m being scammed. I have a scope for sale. A member sent me a DM offering to buy it using PayPal friends and family. Their profile says they joined in 2020 but it also shows no posts from them. I know there is a way PayPal can get the money back if sent in error and I’m worrying that are going to try to pull that.

Thoughts or advice?

Or have a video call w the buyer to see if he is legit

if he sends you money you are most likely not the victim of a scam!

I’d say you are fine.

But ya, also just talk to the guy on the phone.

But it is possible with PayPal and Venmo for them to claim they were hacked and get the money back out of your account after they get the merchandise. I’ve heard if it happening.

Transfer it to your bank account when you receive it. Both of those services have instant transfer

They are not going to take the money from you.

And again, just call the guy and see if he’s a normal nice dude just trying to buy a scope from you.

Do you mind me asking what auction you are referencing? I'm not in the market for any of those rifles...just curious.

Good morning from Montana.

I'm looking at a post from 2018 where you were looking for a lefty Winchester in .375 H&H Magnum. I'm selling mine. My email is [redacted] in the event that you're still searching for a unicorn.

Best,

Kelly Palmer
