The biggest ele I have seen in Gabon since 37 years . Loango National Park

Estimate the weight of this Elephant’s tusks. I took this photo in Kruger Park a couple days ago. North of Lower Sabie. View attachment 472446
Photos are always difficult. My calculated estimate puts him at 68 to 70 pounds but I have to subtract because he still has very thin ivory for almost half the length so that puts him at 60 to 62 pounds in my book.
He has potential to become a great tusker but the shape and thickness of his tusks put him at risk of breaking them

Thank you all for this wonderful collection of big tusker info on one place. The Rwanda tusker is worth following.

@ Philippe,
This photo is really unique and you can well imagine that you should not enter these forests without 500 grain bullet weight upwards in your rifle, although I would be far from touching a hair on this wonderful giant.
Rather a few buffaloes and forest hogs:)

Like a picture from the old, colonial days.

Thank you for posting it.

For @Foxi Another good forest bull from Gabon (Lopé national Park) but not also impressive that the another one posted at the top of the pageView attachment 472582 .
If only they did not have the cursed ivory. It would be enough to use them as meat suppliers.Since biblical times and before they have been persecuted for their white gold.It is a wonder that they still exist today.

Here a strong bull.
Tana River,early fifties.
When the world was still in order for people like us ;)

Correct @Foxi !
Every time I see a handsome carrier in this country, I tell myself that he has been very clever to survive so far!

I took this pic in Oct 2019 in Kruger. Not sure how big these two bulls are, but defiantly the biggest I've ever seen in person. Sorry for the grainy pic, but they were a long ways off and was take with my iPhone.

I think they are at least 100#

That is not possible by a long shot.....together yes each not yet

My rough way of getting there is 5.5-6” diameter at lip, 6’ of length. Maybe that’s a bad estimate but would get you pretty close to 100 imo.

So how does your calculator work?
I estimate the circumference at the lip at 17"
