I just got done reading an article that said, basically, you can use 3 cartridges to use for worldwide hunting. # 1 was pretty much a given. #2 was a total shock, and #3 was surprising, but understandable.

#1 - Varmint Cartridge: this can be any number of the .22 caliber high velocity rounds, ranging from .223 up to the newer .224 Valkyrie

#2 - Deer and a little heavier game up to elk, and moose, and will do double duty for African Plains Game: The .270 Winchester! Given the newer bullets intended for the less powerful 6.8 SPC II, the .270 can do double duty of being an outstanding varmint cartridge at even extreme ranges, and with the bullet tech catching up to the .270 caliber, can do an excellent job for hunting animals that have larger bodies, like elk, kudu, eland, with premium bullets. Use the 140 gr - 150 gr bullets to near max or max velocities.

#3 - Medium bore cartridges that will handle heavier game worldwide, and they hit above there “weight class”: these three are tied - 9.3x62, .35 Whelen, and the .338 Winchester Magnum!
For hunting in North America, a “heavy” rifle such as the .35 Whelen will handle the heaviest of game along with the North American dangerous game animals like Kodiak and Polar Bear. The 9.3x62 is the equivalent of the .35 Whelen, except used in Africa where legal.

The 9.3, 35 Whelen and 338 Winchester are not legal in all areas for dangerous game in Africa. Strange list.

Yes, I quite agree with you there.
But where the 9.3 is legal, it does an amazing job. It’s extremely efficient, and super accurate. And the way it handles heavier game, this isn’t from me, but other writers, it works amazingly well, even though it’s not of the belted variety Magnum.

1. 223
2. 30-06
3. 375 h&h

Yes, the .223, and .30-06 cover the same that is listed above.
But not all shoot well with the .375 H&H. In as much, people tend to shoot much better with the .35 Whelen, and or 9.3x62, due to much less recoil.

Anything less than a 375HH for #3, and the list falls short to "Hunt Worldwide."

The article was written by Phil Massoro, and it was published in American Hunter.

300WM
375H&H

But I'd really like a 20 bore O/U shotgun to round out the field.

257 WBY
7mm Rem Mag
375HH
and if I'm allowed one more 20G

12 ga. Shotgun
300 Mag
.375

you can hunt the world with these 3 calibers.

I have it covered then.

I also have rimfire .22 the 223 for varmints and a couple of 7mms in lieu of the .270

I guess there is no strictly correct answer so let's not argue this one ,

The Americans among us quickly added their favourite the ole' Ought Six.

I'm sure there will be support for the .35whelen.

12 Gauge
300 Win Mag
505 Gibbs

As usual, this thread as many with similar topics is biased by riflemen, forgetting shotgunning, with two exemptions so far.

What about small game and birds?

So, three cartridges to hunt the world, would be:

12 GA
30-06
375 H&H

And then, we have covered it all. The world, the game, the continents, the availability of ammunition.

Hunting all over the world? Remember military calibers are not allowed in many countries.
Some of these calibers are listed above my post, most noted 30-06, .223 & 7X57.
Another item to remember ammo availability in the country that you are hunting.

Business is the only way to fly. I'm headed to SA August 25. I'm hoping that business isn't an arm and a leg. If you don't mind, what airline and the cost for your trip. Mine will be convoluted. I'll be flying into the states to pick up my 416 Rigby as Thailand doesn't allow firearms (pay no attention to the daily shootings and killings) so I'll have 2 very long trips.

Hi EGS

I read your thread with interest. Would you mind sending me that PDF? May I put it on my website?
