Lion Hunt with a bow Vinny Berranco | Hunting Legends Africa

A couple of questions:

1) Was the archery tackle proper?
2) Did the lion appear to be drugged or just very tame?
3) How long a period by SA law is lion to be released prior to hunting.

Now my comments.

I am hardcore when it comes to hunting. I have also trapped and hunted commercially so the killing of animals is not foreign to me. This video was very difficult for me to watch. The lion IMO was either very tame or drugged. The wild lions I have been around react very differently when approached. Also the arrow penetration seemed very limited.

Is this typical for a canned hunt? Hunting Legends seems proud of it since they posted it on their site.

more like a pet lion! i agree not pleasant to watch. i dont know anything about bow hunting but i thought with the correct equipment you could shoot clean through the animal causing maximum damage, not hardly penetrating as seems to be the case here. not my cup of tea at all.

That is awful. Lion is obviously drugged. I am sending an email to "legends" asking them to take it down because it makes all hunters look bad. I ask you guys to as well.

Seemed a bit tame. Poor penetration of the arrows as well. But I have seen lions using a lot more time to die from rifleshots, so...i dont know?

By the looks of it not my idea of an authentic hunt...but lets just be careful with assumptions and downing an outfitter before we have facts, ok. It's only fair.

The lion might have been chased before-hand and is now just tired, or released two years prior but still that it does not see humans as a threat that it should really run away too far, who knows??? ...Just think of all the possibilities is all i'm saying and don't get to hurting the name of Hunting Legends before you have proof of what actually happened on the hunt (besides the video evidence - as video evidence always only captures the last few minutes of any hunt. Video evidence is what the anti-hunting communities use against hunters even when the hunt was legal and ethical, and within legislation. Right or Wrong?).

I've seen it many times on hunting forums where people make assumptions on video clips and thread information then later found out they were wrong via hard eveidence, but the damage has been done in the mean time. Give Hunting Legends a chance to respond before you write them off. Not trying to piss anybody off or start a huge debate, i'm just trying to be objective regrdless of how I feel about this hunting video clip (which is actually in line with most of the posts).

Mike I cannot answer your questions about the Bow tackle as I am not a bow hunter, I also can't tell just by the video if it is tame or drugged becuase it could be either, or both, or none at all, I also cannot tell you what the legislation about the time-frames of letting lion loose before hunting either. Ask an Outfitter who hunts lion on fenced-off properties.

Im not defending Hunting Legends nor am I attacking them based on this one video clip.

Keep well all,

I am all for Lion hunting in SA (I do believe that control should be very tight though, and min prpoperty size should be around 25 000 +) But I would not have posted this on a my website, Can't tell if the cat was drugged.... so I wont asume anything, it is allot more relaxed than what I have seen on many other hunts though...very true Mike thats clearly visible.
(not fun to watch)
My best

PS they could add a viewer warning....for potential viewers.

I am an avid bowhunter. My thoughts on arrow penetration. The first two shots are quartering towards which inhibits penetration due to heavy leg bone, shoulder blade and muscle mass. The last shot had proper shot angle but very poor penetration. Factors can includes poor equipment selection such as lightweight arrow which limits Kinetic Energy and momentum. Then there is broadhead types. Was he using a cut on impact type? Yet another factor could be that on the last shot the bow string hit his bow-arm. I can tell you from experience that will slow done arrow speed big-time. Not defending or attacking either. Just offering some archery incite.

From the same company that took the Trump boys hunting in Zim. I'm just NOT too sure what to make of this to be honest? However, if this is the average S.A./Kalahari Lion outing - I'm real certain that I'll pass.

I never wanted to say I'm "against" these Lion outings, but man this one sure makes it hard to like, or support - WOW!!! As much as I love the African Lion, this is truly hard to watch! I don't know, I'm turning 40 in May - perhaps I'm just getting soft in my old age:cool:

Over the years I've tried to keep an open mind on the "Canned" lion subject, and frankly, without having experienced it myself - I do believe it would be a bit unfair for me to pass FINAL judgment, and rally against it 100%. However, this example just looks REALLY bad! So bad in fact, that I found myself feeling sorry for the Lion as he was pelted with arrows, from a bow that obviously had insufficient draw weight, and could barely penetrate the thin-skinned animal.

My girlfriend knows my fascination with the African Lion, and my love for hunting them too! She's a non-hunter, but totally supports my choice to do it. I let her watch this video clip last night, and she was damn near in tears! She said, had she no knowledge/experience with lion hunting because of our relationship. This video alone would would make her anti-lion hunting for sure. And as others have stated already, most of us are not too impressed with this display of sportsmanship, imagine the reaction this garners from the non-hunting community? Keep in mind, its not the anti-hunting community we are concerned with, they are anti-hunting no matter what. Its the 70% of the population, who just like my girlfriend are simply non-hunters. Not necessarily against it, but seeing things like this video clip is exactly what makes detractors out of the masses that we need on our side.

At least if you're gonna participate/film this sort of thing - PLEASE do not put it out for public display!

My favorite part of the whole clip was at the end, when the guy is sitting behind his lion, telling us how they "spotted" it from the truck.

Well no shit! Who would have ever guessed that???

Mike,
Regarding the legislation for Captive Bred lions, I am speaking under correction, but think it is 3 months. In other words , a captive bred lion has to be released for a minimum of 3 months, before it is allowed to be hunted.

If another hunter is put off by a video I immediately take note. I had some significant trepidation about viewing this at all.

I waited to see a few more reactions to the video before I reconsidered.

I started then stopped within two minutes, before the "shooting" started. The portends were strong enough for me already; Exhausted, drugged, tame I have no idea.

I'll remain ignorant.

I notice at least one dog there, its possible the lion was exhausted from running, though about 3 minutes in, I would have expected a charge if the lion was wild. As to how long it took to die, looks about normal from many of the lions I have seen shot on film at least, whether bow or rifle. I dont think I can get too worked up about this hunt either way.

Yeah, I would have thought the rifles would have come up a lot sooner. Regardless, (drugged, tame, whatever) from what I have read about the "canned lion hunts" in SA were a little more exciting and dangerous than this. Beautiful lion though it may be, video was dry.

Agree on that

Not what I have in mind when I go with louis, at least for me I would not have posted it but that is because not a clean kill and who wants to tell the world you hunted from a truck geeeeeeeeeeeeee,

This is more my style and will leave my bow at home, ps I have shot ELk with my bow and he did not have the right combo at least from the video very poor penetration or they need a new range finder.

The video has been removed....

Got this from their website:

Lion Hunt with a bow Vinny
Berranco
In lieu of an email received from Mr. Scott
Sherif (Canada) who obviously puts the
interest of the greater hunting community
first in life, Hunting Legends has been
requested to remove this video link. In
discussion with Scott, what comes across in
the video from a pure neutral point of view
is the actual final minutes and not the run up
to the hunt. This leaves a lot of doors open
to speculation and opinions, especially if
you weren't on the hunt yourself.
As we as hunters are constantly under attack
from anti's who would jump at each and
every opportunity to critisize and belittle
our industry, we have decided to remove
the video footage as suggested.
However, we are willing to share the
following facts with you:
The hunt in mention took place on a large
50,000 acre ranch.
It was a fair chase and total legal hunt as
prescribed by the relevant authorities.
The actual footage filmed was of a lion hunt
which took over 4 hours and was filmed by
Sportsmen of North America.
The reflected clip only showed the last few
minutes of the hunt, and the run up and
details of what took place was not reflected
on the video, thus creating an opportunity
for people to speculate.
We will try to get the full footage and
request a remake of this clip, showing the
run up to the actual hunt which should
resolve all the questions, speculations and
potential conflict.
We have done this in good faith and to
support the integrity of the hunting industry
at large.

The lion chased for 4 hours, could certenly explain why it looks exausted.

Now it they get it off Youtube lol, wonder of the Internet, easy to put on and hard to get off, still poor performance of the guys bow

still poor performance of the guys bow

No doubt on that. The broadside shots should have slipped right trough, at least burried to the feathers.
Maybe he would have chosen a better set up and/or broadhead if the ph didnt had his gun with him.....

LMAO that is a very good point, I really have to give the PH's a lot of credit, time and time you guys make the last minute shot that keeps us from being dinner on this DG stuff. My kids been watching every video and they now have a differant outlook on DG hunting. They were surprised at how many friends they have that went ugh your dad is killing a lion. But they stand their ground and explain, it helps they are all girls and hunt:cool:

47 day till I hit Africa and I post up my video hopefully it will have me being the hunter :dancing: Louis pay attention!!!!

This is not some thing I would share with my friends. Stretch sums up my thoughts on the archery aspect. It definitely gives ammo to the anti hunters and dooms lion hunt as whole. The lion had nothing left to give...no fight left. Sad.
