Exclusive: Trump Slams Elephant Hunting For Trophies, Skeptical Fees Go For Conservation

In an interview with Piers Morgan set to air Sunday, Trump calls the initial U.S. decision to lift a ban on trophy imports “terrible.”

In an interview with Piers Morgan set to air Sunday night in the U.K., President Donald Trump used the word “terrible” to describe the initial decision last year by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to overturn an Obama era ban on the import of elephant trophies.

Trump also says he does not believe the substantial fees that hunters pay to hunt elephants and other species actually go toward conservation efforts, as is often claimed, and instead are pocketed by government officials in other countries.

Trump confirms that the ban on importing elephant trophies from the African nations of Zimbabwe and Zambia will remain in place. That was not clear after he initially put the ban reversal on hold, pending further study.

The Fish and Wildlife Service, overseen by Interior Department Secretary Ryan Zinke, announced on Nov. 15 that it was rescinding an Obama administration ban on the import of elephant trophies from Zimbabwe and Zambia, saying money generated by the hunting goes toward conservation efforts.

“Legal, well-regulated sport hunting as part of a sound management program can benefit the conservation of certain species by providing incentives to local communities to conserve the species and by putting much-needed revenue back into conservation,” the service said.

But the announcement on reversing the ban was met with scathing criticism from both the left and right. Powerful conservative media figures like Michael Savage and Laura Ingraham criticized Trump for the decision and called on him to keep the ban in place. Talk show host Ellen DeGeneres announced a campaign to persuade Trump to maintain the ban that quickly went viral through the hashtag #BeKindToElephants.

On Nov. 17 Trump tweeted, “Put big game trophy decision on hold until such time as I review all conservation facts. Under study for years. Will update soon with Secretary Zinke. Thank you!”

The announcement that he was putting the reversal on hold shocked many, primarily because his two eldest sons, Donald Jr. and Eric, are both avid hunters and have been criticized for hunting wildlife in Africa.

Trump also is closely aligned with the National Rifle Association, which strongly lobbies for trophy hunting rights. Two days after he made that announcement, he tweeted, “Big-game trophy decision will be announced next week but will be very hard pressed to change my mind that this horror show in any way helps conservation of Elephants or any other animal.”

That tweet led some to believe the ban would remain in place but no further announcement was made as promised.

In his comments to Morgan, Trump said, “Well, I changed it,” referring to reversing the move to end the ban.

He continued: “I didn’t want elephants killed and stuffed and have the tusks brought back into this [country] and people can talk all they want about preservation and all of the things that they’re saying where money goes towards ― well, money WAS going ― in that case, going to a government which was probably taking the money, OK? I turned that order around. You know, that was an order. I totally turned it around. Were you shocked that I did it?”

Morgan: “I was surprised.”

Trump: “I thought it was terrible. That was done by a very high level government person. As soon as I heard about it, I turned it around. That same day ― not even a day went by. No, I was not believing in [the conservation argument].”

The interview with Morgan is Trump’s first major sit-down interview with a non-U.S. television network and airs at 10 p.m. Sunday on ITV.

One has to wonder who the Trump family really are ...

This is not exactly what I call making America great again.

It's pretty well known here in the States that Trump isn't a hunter while his boys are. Nothing new about that. From what I remember, the boys got their interest in hunting from their mom's (Ivanna) dad.

Speck the $$ for exportable just went up. This truly is unfortunate for all involved. More forests will be turned into deserts due to overpopulation and unchecked poaching will continue due to no value policy. This reality show administration is not what the country had in mind when they cast their votes. I guess common sense isn’t common. Sad

Guys,
I'm just on my way out, so won't see the replies for a while. Hope that I don't get stoned for this, but please keep the following in mind.
We all love hunting. I made it my livelihood. I support anything towards hunting, and although Zimbabwe/Tanzania importation to the USA has nothing to do with me as a South African, I still support it.

Just because of his stance, does not make him a bad President. He has done a hell of a job for your country thus far. Before you start shouting about how this will change your vote at the next election, just be still for a while and think about your response. When you sat in the voting booth making your mark, was your first though that you are voting for Trump, hoping he would reopen Elephant hunting, or was your thought that he was the guy that was going to make the USA the power it use to be.

I would wait for the actual interview to see what comments he makes. The Huffington Post is far from an unbiased media source.

Never trust the Huff post rag!

Marius is right. When in the voting booth weren't worried about importing elephant. Was looking at the overall picture in the US and Hillary was just not an option. Getting the elephant ban lifted would have been an after the fact bonus.

Mr. Trump has certainly proved bette than the alternative we had. What causes frustration is that Mr. Trump, and Republicans in general, take hunters and gun owners for granted. Trump promised to push for national reciprocity of state concealed handgun permits. This would be of huge benefit to American gun owners. He hasn't said a word about it since taking office. There is also a bill in Congress to relax the current draconian regulation of silencers, and again, no support from the President. His caving in to the left on elephant trophies is pretty clearly a calculated political move: there are more people who oppose elephant hunting than the relatively small group who support it.

Basically we haven't gotten any progress on firearms and hunting issues. We are supposed to be content that the other side didn't win and impose new restrictions.

I guess the only bright side to this is that not allowing trophy importation probably keeps the cost of elephant hunts down. Maybe I can mange one at some point--as long as I am content with photos instead of trophies.

One thing I have found out about all these politicians is big issues are made about gun control and abortion but after election you don't hear much about them. After 67 years of living none of them have drastically changed my life and frankly I never dreamed I would be hunting in Africa once but been there three times and planning on going again. Still a great country

After rereading all I fail to see any shouting about changing votes in next election. As a die hard republican I’d vote for Donald Duck if he was on the ticket. Still a mystery to me how we still think we can micro manage the world
Cheers Jacques

Plenty of changing the vote screaming on FB, likely where Marius saw it as I know we are in some of the same groups.

Totally agree on the U.S. thinking it can micromanage the world. Or really, it's the U.S. micromanaging the world because it can.

OK...so if the ban stays, what do you think will happen in Europe, etc..?

I can hear the antis partying..:A Yell: :D Beers:

It will be the end of elephant hunting and be the doom of the elephant...we all know what happens if the game has no value..

Donald Duck is a populist without balls and a moral compass..!

I've said it before and I will say it again.

Don't like the importation ban? Protest it by going to Zimbabwe and hunting an elephant. It's still perfectly legal you know.

HUNTERS make the ban successful, not ARA, not Trump, not Obama, not the Federal US government, not the EU, HUNTERS. The trinket is more important to many than the experience or conservation.

Only the diehards will do that...and the market will be more or less gone..

Trump is not and never has been a hunter. His sons are hunters thanks to their maternal grandfather. I am pretty confident that he has no interest in a very tiny group of people who want to bring trophies home to the U.S. Fully agree with @Royal27. Hunting elephant hasn't been banned, only bringing the ivory home, at least in some cases to the U.S. As far as the effect on the EU, I have no idea, and I am pretty sure Trump doesn't care and is not interested.

Only the diehards will do that...and the market will be more or less gone..

Exactly my point.

Hunters cause the ban to be a success. As a group we talk about conservation and it's importance, but many don't really mean it. The trinket is more important and wins over conservation and the experience.

I may hunt an elephant someday and I really don't want to bring anything home. The house is full. Culls for me.
