Will hunt buff in SA, I will bring my .470 Krieghoff and hopefully stalk into 30 - 50 yards.. I have factory Hornady with DGX bonded, Norma Woodleigh SP and Federal and Norma solids.. Cape buffalo is a new species to hunt for me..my DG experience is elephant..

Al the mentioned ammo regulate more or less alike.

Should I bring solids for follow up shots or is that a thing of the past..? Opinions..?

Softs are all you will need nowadays. Last two buffalo I hunted were with Hornady DGX 50+ and 60 yards respectively. Both double lung shot and one round is all that was needed per buffalo. Found the bullets just under the skin on the other side.

Impressive!

I used Barnes 500GR. TSX out of a 458 Lott in October based on the outfitter recommendation. After 3 Buffaloes in 7 days I will not use anything else. I was traveling with a safari mentor who was use to the old 1 soft and all solid follow up, so he was skeptical at first. After the first bull died within 20 yards and he inspected the wound channel, he loaded Barnes the following morning.

My only experience with TSX was using 235 grainers in .375H&H on PG in Namibia...worked splendidly..large wound channels and perfect expansion..

As of a day or 3 ago, Swift had 500 gr 470 cal A Frames for sale - that's the only A Frame they had any stock of.

I’ve shot multiple buffalo with a 375 but can’t speak on the 470. I’ve used Trophy Bonded Bear Claws, A-Frames, and Woodleigh Solids. The TBBC have performed flawlessly and all been recovered under the offside skin. The solid got a quartering pass throug and the on a Buff in Zim last year single shot from an A-Frame did the job, BUT i was surprised I got a pass through when I wasn’t getting them on Kudu, Eland, Wildebeest, etc.

That being said I’d choose the TBBC or an A-Frame. It’s done great on everything it’s hit.

Side Note …. If you want to get rid of the Federal 470 Solids let me know. I have a DR regulated for them. Would trade a some other solids or softs I have for them. Shoot me a PM if interested.

Barnes TSX 300 gn in my 375 H&H on my buff, no pictures of the damage but heart/lung one shot piled up in about 70 yards, recovered round under the skin far side.

I'm in the same boat. You will have multiple options should you reload or even go for factory loads. I plan to use Swift AF for my first followed by either a Federal TBBC or Norma Woodleigh RNSN or North Fork CPS. Good to have choices... All of them shoot well as does Hornady DGX factory ammo.

In that short distance between entry and exist the bullet must have expanded significantly to cause such a big exit wound.

Out of these the Norma loaded Woodleigh, no solids needed.....

I realize how hard the bug has bit. I’m on the cusp of safari #2 and I’m looking to plan #3 with my 11 year old a year from now while looking at my work schedule for overtime and computing the math of how many shifts are needed….

I'd like to get some too.

Hallo Marius- do you have possibilities for stags in September during the roar? Where are your hunting areas in Romania?

I'm about ready to pull the trigger on another rifle but would love to see your rifle first, any way you could forward a pic or two?
