JMO, but scotches are very similar to wines, ie what you pair them with can make a huge difference in their enjoyment.

I am a huge Laphroaig fan! You'll probably like Ardbeg as well...

Bowmore is a nice "every day" alternative and less peated.

I've not tasted all of them, but it's not for lack of trying.
Been sippin' single malts from my Grandfathers knee.
Started somewhere around age 7 or so, loved it ever since.
Got into the Isla's in my 20's.
Scotch tasking club where I live has taught me much.

Bowmore, Ardbeg, Talisker, Bruichladdich, Kilchoman, Jura...etc.
Very fond of Caol Ila as well.
Probably 1 and 1a with Lagavulin.

Don't worry.
You still have time to properly develop your palate.
And yes, Scotch with breakfast.
You can't drink all day if you don't start in the morning.

With a drop of Scottish blood running through my veins, I treat myself to a bottle of single malt every Christmas. This year's choice is Oban 14 year old, and I plan to have my first dram in front of the fire tonight, after a trip out to try for a roe. I'd be interested to hear what other AH members who enjoy a glass of whisky will be sampling over the festive season; slainte!

Glenfiddich 15 is my favorite. You can spend more, but the taste and quality all come together here.
Along with a good cigar, heaven.

I use to drink nothing but single malts neat with a water back. As I have gotten older (lucky me to have made it this far!) I get heartburn from scotch. Bummer because I did enjoy it so! Now I prefer two glasses of a red blend wine nightly.
I mostly preferred the less smoky highland single malts except when I had a good heavy grilled fillet of elk, or venison, or antelope, or bear rump, or even (heaven forbid!) beef!

I have enjoyed reading this thread, as I know nothing about whisky. While searching for bourbon this evening, I decided to include an Oban 14 year scotch in my purchases. I am pleasantly surprised! Wish I had tried this sooner.

Oban is a very solid Scotch, try Balvenie Doublewood and Macallan 12, you should like those as well.

Well, since this old thread has resurfaced and I have read all the posts here are my thoughts:

I like all booze (lol) and I was mainly on single malt scotch for quite a while for liquor. I HATE Laphroaig and Ardbeg and the "sweaty socks" taste. Lagavulin is peaty but smokier so I can choke that down. But give me Speyside/Highlands ALL DAY. Macallan, Balvenie, Aberlour, Dalmore-most of the Glens as well I like. Glenmorangie 18 ($125 US dollars today retail) is possibly the best combination of quality vs value.

Irish whiskey, yes sir. Jameson always, Redbreast, Green Spot, Dead Rabbit (find that, really good for the money) all good. Rare Middleton was mentioned by a gentleman, had it once. Awesome and spendy.

As an American, I have been on bourbon mostly lately though and they are supreme quality these days and extremely trendy now. It is hard to find a bottle of Blanton's ever. Same for many others. But so many great ones.

Beer- IPA's baby! King of all beer styles. I like almost all beer that said. Guinness is good. So mnay great craft beers these days. Hope you all have a nice bottle to enjoy.

I've drifted away from the Scottish whiskies, now focussing on an Aussie drop (pricey) made in Albany, on King Gorge Sound, way down sout in Western Australia; won some international fame a few years back: Limeburners infinity Solera Cask single malt; light, delicate, with a great nose.
Whisky is, after all a very personal matter; whatever you fancy, ENJOY !!

Most of the Aussie whiskies are rather pricey;well worht the expenditure though ....
