So what is considered a reasonable trophy size Warthog? Is it about age or tusk size?

I believe that you are looking at a trophy warthog when the tips of the tusks are level with the eyes.
Now someone put that into feet and inches :))

That judging thread will show you the whole range of trophies.

There is one "exceptional" trophy in the list. It's amazing.

I saw on this year that my PH said was 12 inches in emails after my return home. A hunter took him the week after I left. I will tell you they went way above his eyes and then some.

To me age is always the most important when judging any trophy, it gives more character, if inches go with it much better. Warthog tusk shapes differ, you get the longer flatter ones going out to the side, and then you get the ones that curl to the top. I would say above ten always makes a nice pig.

Those are nice Pieter! And Gig Em Aggies! :)

I agree though, it is about character and is personal and to each his own. Maybe more so with the pigs than with many animals.

Pieter I hope that one day you find me one as good as those!

The Warthog you are happy with is a trophy :)
I am happy with this sow taken when stalking with my bow and is a trophy for me.

A nice Warthog will look nice on the foot.

Some you will look at and, just say it will be a few more years.

I have seen 2 in the bush that looked very big. We never had a chance at either of them.

While i have seen 50 to 100 in my few trips that looked small.

I have taken one that i consider real nice one.

The issues with hunting warthogs, become the area that you are hunting, if the ground is gravely with rocks, the tusk, tend to be broken or worn more.

Like all game you have to look to potential quality areas for larger tusked warthogs. :)

That's another Warthog taken with great friend and PH Pieter Erasmus in June 2014... How much do you think he measures?

10-11 inches for the above tusks.
I have taken 2. Two different countries, 5 years apart and oddly enough they taped out at exactly the same, 12 inches each.

You guys are just torturing me :).

This one is from 2008, Limpopo

I agree if they look good to you and on the wall then they are a trophy. Also size will depend a lot on the area they are such as rocky areas the tusks get worn down more.

They are small if you cannot see the tusks :). I would pass on those.

Business is the only way to fly. I'm headed to SA August 25. I'm hoping that business isn't an arm and a leg. If you don't mind, what airline and the cost for your trip. Mine will be convoluted. I'll be flying into the states to pick up my 416 Rigby as Thailand doesn't allow firearms (pay no attention to the daily shootings and killings) so I'll have 2 very long trips.

Hi EGS

I read your thread with interest. Would you mind sending me that PDF? May I put it on my website?
